A refreshing bubbly drink is desirable in any season, but particularly in hot weather. Pour it over ice on a hot day and you have an excellent refresher.

While it comes after the hot and humid summer has passed, Soda Sparkle, the home soda machine that lets you take plain water and carbonate it, finally came to Japan earlier this year.

Anywhere, anytime; as long as you have water you can make it sparkling with this handy little machine. All you have to do is fill the bottle with plain water and set the gas cartridge to the charger unit.

Set the charger unit to the bottle and twist the gas cartridge so that it will start releasing gas and shake it for about five seconds and you’ve got carbonated water. This all can be done in a matter of about 35 seconds and all that’s left to do is pour out your freshly carbonated water into a glass with ice.

Japan is not a major consumer of plain soda water compared to places like Europe where mineral water is usually carbonated. But with this handy little machine, sparkling water is bound to become more popular in Japan.

A spokesperson for Idea On Line Shop Co Ltd, the sellers of Soda Sparkle, commented that this handy little machine could be taken to BBQs. “In fact it is very portable and could be carried along to any outdoor event.” It would be fun for BBQs, camp outs, and home parties. Soda Sparkle will be the life of the party because everyone will want to watch the performance, not to mention all the thirsts that will be quenched with tasty drinks. It can be the crowd pleaser at your next party!”

Of course it can be enjoyed in the privacy of your own home as well. Try drinking it freshly made or mixed with your favorite liquor to make any cocktail you’d like. Carbonated water can also be used in cooking. It is a well known meat tenderizer for when you stew meat. It will make your tempura crispier if you use it in the batter.

Soda water is popular among health conscious people as a health and beauty aid. It is zero calories yet it fills you up. It aids in digestion and keeps bowl movements regular. It is a good diet drink.

If you use it after a moisturizer, patting it gently onto your face, carbonated water will open your pores, allowing for more of the moisturizer to be absorbed. Also, carbonation helps oxygen be absorbed by the body, keeping alkaline in balance. Soda water will help restore your body after a hard sweaty work out at the gym.

Soda Sparkle’s starter kit includes two bottles from which you can choose the level of carbonation, and 5 gas cartridges. The price for this kit is 7,900 yen.

The two bottles in the Soda Sparkle starter kit are different sizes. One is 1.3 liters and the other is 1.0 liter. One gas cartridge will work for both sizes but the level of carbonation will be higher in the smaller bottle. The bottles can be used over and over. Gas cartridges are sold in packs of 50 for 2,500 yen. The cost of carbonating a liter of water is 50 yen.

Making your own carbonated water is something to feel good about. It is economical and healthy. The act of producing it yourself is enjoyable and once you’ve tried it for yourself you will want this handy little machine within reach so that you can make sparkling water any time you want.

We had something like that at home when I was a kid. I think it was a bit more high-tech though. To get the soda water out all you had to do was press a lever and it came out of a spout.

It's like the SodaStream contraption we used to have 35 years ago. That had various flavours you could add to the soda, so was more advanced than this "new" product.

I wonder if there is any scientific evidence for all the claims made in the article (aids digestion, regular bowel movements, helps body absorb oxygen etc)?

I like carbonated water as a way to stay away from soft drinks. It's amazing when mixed with Calpis!

Scrote,

In fact sodastream, quite recently started to sell their products in Japan. The gas cartridges on the soda stream will last a lot longer.

cadmium, For me I use the carbonated water to stay away from the beer. And sometimes to make grape tonic, which seems to be close to impossible to get around here.

MMM well, in the United States I have asked many times at restaurants for carbonated/mineral water and most of the times they'd say they don't have. However in Japan, almost every place I asked for it had it (lemonade with carbonated water), specially in the Osaka, Kobe, Kyoto region, so I don't know why it is stated in the article it is not that popular.

I like that carbonated water with malt and hops they sell. The name escapes me....

Me to luca, me to. That was the reason I got one of those carboniterator thingamajigs in the first place.

I thought I would be able to mix mugi-cha, vodka and some hops and make myself some synthetic beer.

Squidbert, thanks for the sodastream link! I had no idea they did them here.

After the initial 7,900 yen for the kit including 5 gas cartridges, 1 gas cartridge costs just 50 yen, it can carbonate 1.3 liters of water. In my case, after the second year it will pay for itself. I'll be getting this!

Recently, club soda is going for 88 yen or so for a bottle so 50 yen a cartridge is a good deal. Using a good water filter would help take out the poor taste of the tap water. Finding replacement filters might be a problem.

Okinawa tap water is pretty bad, so they have water shops everywhere. They sell water that has taste. And they also usually sell carbonated water. This is excellent and 50 yen for a 500ml bottle.

As Squidbert points out, Sodastream is in Japan now and you can carbonate something like 60 litres of water for 2,100 yen.

So I think SodaSparkle is going to have to adjust their prices a bit if they want to be competitive.

Soda stream chocolate cola was the ducks nuts. Get my sparkling water from Costco these days, Talking Rain I believe it's called...

What happens to all those gas cartridges? Do they go off to the land fill (definitely NOT something to feel good about" or can you return them to be refilled, like toner cartridges?

If it's not insanely, absurdly trash-producing, this would be a nice thing to have. (One person in my house goes through too many PET bottles of sparkling water every week.)

Does anyone use the SodaStream in Japan? The US seems to have an excellent system for exchanging their much larger canisters for refills. I don't see any mention of that on their Japan site though.

I don't know about the small ones in the article, but the big ones used by SodaStream in Japan gets recycled. In fact you have to return the old cylinder to get a new one. Soda stream cartridges are available in some coffee shops etc. But the most convenient way is to send them in and get replacements sent back. Package delivery services works excellently in Japan.

There was information on how to register in the box, when I bought the machine. All in Japanese, though.
