Recently, a number of footwear makers have been trying their hand (or foot) at trying to preserve the look and charm of geta, or traditional elevated Japanese sandals, while applying the latest technology to make them more comfortable to walk in. You may remember one stand out effort called the Nyarageta--cat-shaped traditional Japanese sandals that will have cat lovers and their feet purring to adorable comfort.
As a refresher from their initial release, the Nyarageta are made by Nara-based footwear maker Narageta, and their name is a a pun combining the maker's name with the Japanese word for "meow" ("Nya"). While they're obviously not subtle, the maker's goal was to appeal to feline fans while fusing traditional aesthetics and technique with modern technology for foot comfort and mobility. Using a design material called EVA, this take on geta is water-resilient and uses a foam-based shock absorbent base to provide for maximum comfort.
Two new "breeds" of the Nyarageta have been released, inspired by the color schemes of black and white "masked" cats as well as Russian Blue cats.
The sizes for the new release are currently available in a woman's "one-size fits all" size and a kid's size.
Narageta recommends pairing them with your favorite yukata or kimono for a casual cat lover's look that'll let you move around in comfort during Japan's tough summer heat. At the moment they are only available from the Narageta's online shop, which appears to unfortunately be Japan only. Previous Nyarageta have appeared on Amazon before, so it may just be a matter of time before the new models show up their as well.
Pairs are priced at 3,780 yen.
