Chocolate beer

Sapporo Breweries Ltd will release “Chocolat Brewery” beer from Jan 14 in a limited quantity. The new beer features chocolate malt and cacao to create a balmy flavor and bitter taste. Some 20,000 sets of 3 cans will be available on the company's online site. From Jan 30, 12,000 cans of the beer will be available at shops only in Hokkaido.

Great! I read this after the story on Japanese love for hamburgers! Is nothing sacred in this country?

Just to get even tonight I'm gonna slop a big spoon full of HOT salsa on a bowl of Japanese white rice and dump jalapeno peppers and trappy's hot sauce into the ramen - TAKE THAT!

At least they are limiting the damage to Hokkaido for the most part. Just the thought of this "beer" makes me gag!

I've had chocolate beer in several countries, you can't blame Japan for it

Flag is right. This is nothing new. However, "a balmy flavor and bitter taste"? Is that really the best way to describe it? Kind of sounds like what I would expect to taste after licking someones armpit.

bit of risk that you have to buy 1 set. I guess Royce is looking for new products to sell.

Over here in the States, Sam Adams Black Lager has overtones of chocolate. They also do a great cherry wheat beer and a cranberry lambic. There's more to beer than (the American version of) Sludgeweiser, thankfully.

Johnbecker, Budweiser isn't an American beer, but thanks anyhoo.

(It's European.)

I've been fortunate enough to imbibe: Guinness with a mule's kick. Good stuff.

Do any of these specialty and regional beers ever taste good? I've tried maybe a dozen or so over the years whenever I'm in Japan and they always seem to lack a refinement that US and EU specialty/micro beers have. They always remind me of mid-level home brew.

Japanese beer is the 'same old same old', packaged in a different can. If only someone could make them think outside of the box and brew something other than the German style lager beers.

Only in Japan...........

3 sets = Y5,480.

Buying 1 set x 3 = Y4,440.

@USARonin - Anheuser-Busch may be a European owned company, but their Budweiser beer is very much an American beer. Compare it to the real European Budweiser and tell me I'm wrong.

I enjoyed the novelty of this happoshu, but it’s not something I’d order for an everyday beer.

The consistency didn’t support the strong flavor.

Fun to try for Valentines Day if you like porters and stouts.
