Electronic grandchild 'Ami-chan' developed by Takara Tomy

Japanese toy maker Takara Tomy has come up with an e-grandchild named Ami-chan. Ami-chan boasts a 1,600 word vocabulary and utilizes facial recognition to identify each grandparent and address them by name once it is registered in her memory bank.

▼ She can see you.

This state-of-the-art smart grandchild will only be sold on the online shop Takara Tomy Mall for 27,500 yen. She will go on sale from Aug 27 and all models sold before 15 September will be guaranteed to be delivered in time for Respect for the Aged Day on Sept 20.

As with any revolutionary technology, people aren’t quite sure what to make of Ami-chan at first. But with time they’ll learn… Everyone will learn.

“Scary.”

“I think my grandpa would prefer a robot escort.”

“It’s come to this…”

“I think one of those robot dogs that do backflips would suffice.”

“They should add a medical alert button to her too.”

“It’s cheaper than I expected.”

“If she breaks I would be too scared to throw her away.”

“Imagine buying one at a second-hand shop and it keeps calling out the name of its previous owner who died…”

“This is so sad.”

“It sounds like she can speak in the Kansai dialect too.”

“I once saw an old lady pushing around a doll in a baby carriage, so this might work.”

Understandably, Ami-chan might be a big step that some families aren’t ready to take yet.

So sad.

I might need to get one for the wife and me. It looks more and more like our kids aren't going to have any kids.

YeahRight - there was a movie - forgot the name - where the protagonist comes out as gay, and his mother laments, "I need grandchildren. It's like a drug." But it seems like my son will marry soon, so all is not hopeless for me.

How creepy these dolls are seems to depend on how lifelike they are. I guess the benefit over a 'fur baby' is that you don't have to clear up poop and you can get them fixed when they stop working.

Do they do a Chucky version for Yakuza grandmothers?

Dear god, how depressing.

GBR48, love the Chucky version for Yakuza grandmothers!

Cute. For the price, wish the nose ‘wrinkled a little’ when it “speaks”, at least.

Sadly, it will have to be ‘de-commissioned(?)’ when obachan passes.

(SPOILERS: the A.I. scene when she had to take the boy ‘for a drive to the forest’.)

Did you want a grandchild? Your ungrateful children (single and working 12 hours to pay the rent) doesn't have any? Ok no problem ..

Respect the Aged? Why not spend time with them instead of buying them this piss take.
