Feeling lonely? Romi might help

By 2040, it’s been predicted that almost 40% of Japanese households will be people living alone. For better or worse, while living alone guarantees you the freedom of independence, it can sometimes be a lonely affair. To combat feelings of isolation or loneliness, Japanese companies like Mixi have stepped up to the challenge with some innovative solutions.

Romi is an artificially intelligent robot that’s made to keep you company through daily conversation. Aside from telling you the weather forecast or the time, it continually updates itself using ChatGPT. It’s made to chat with you about your day, react to your stories and sing you songs.

In collaboration with Sanrio’s Hello Kitty franchise which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2024, Romi is set to release a limited edition Hello Kitty-themed Romi robot. The robot has a Hello Kitty design and comes with a set of Hello Kitty songs.

With only 150 units, you’ll want to pre-order as early as you can for its official launch on November 1, 2023. Priced at ¥88,000 the robot is available for pre-order on the official website.

I wonder what kind of memory it has: ChatGPT had its memory reduced to prevent.... unfortunate results.
