Sharp Corp has a new large-format refrigerator that it claims helps vegetables and other perishable food items last longer. The lower portion of the refrigerator features a special hermetically-sealed compartment to keep vegetables fresh. This area allows various perishables to hold moisture for longer periods. You can adjust the temperature levels and fan direction.
The 515-liter fridge also features a “plasma cluster” unit that prevents mold and reduces odors.
On sale Nov 4. Price: 250,000 yen.

Boy! You can say that again! This summer my fridge broke down, in the middle of the horrible summer, man oh man, was our milk bad! May the gods bless Sharp fridges!

Most fridges I know will give food longer life than if it was left outside. I thought that was the basic function of fridges :S

We have had a Sharp WA-35E for 9 years. Left it on during our 5 week UK holiday during the hottest summer without the aircon on and it is as good as new. Sharp are the best fridges.

My fridge survived the summer but I had to freeze things like spinach coz it went bad after a single day. I may buy one of these bad boys for next year.

250,000 yen for a fridge? Har!

I agree with you that fridges are supposed to give food longer life.
Maybe the article is meant to be, "Fridge gives food longer life compared to other fridges".
Looks like its just an advertisement for Sharp's new refrigerator. The article's title really makes one ask. "So what?"
"Sun is hot" more on the 11:00 news.

Our 15 year old Sharp fridge died last summer, so called in the repair man from the company, on arrival he proceeded to spend an hour trying to sell us a new fridge, but I insisted that all it needed a freon recharge as the compressor was still working properly. Begrudgingly he came back the next day with his tools and recharged it and voilà everything got cold again and it's still working well some 16 months later, repair cost 16,000 yen (long out of warranty)so maybe (touch wood) we'll get another 15 years out of it. A lot of newer fridges can not be repaired if they break down due to the way the are manufactured, so am happy to be stuck with an older Sharp.

I know. I was just taking the piss.

All I know is that my Sharp fridge is such a power hog I bought a new Panasonic.
Anyway, yes, moisture is key. Bobbafett, if you want to keep spinach fresh you have to put water in the bottom of the bag. Another option is to buy a tall jar, but water in the bottom, but the spinach in, and cover the whole thing with a clean bag (the bag the spinach came in will have soil and possibly manure in the bottom). It takes fridge space, but as I consider spinache essential its worth it. Or, you can buy this over-priced refridgerator.

People should be smarter about how they store food. A lot of things should not be refrigerated, such as raw eggs, tomatoes, bananas, cabbage, daikon, pumpkins, potatoes, onions, most fruits, bread, etc. Everyone knows this, right?
Things have gotten kind of bizarre. People want to have volume AND variety, so they buy a fridge big enough for that, and then food gets bought and lost and the whole things gets crazy with accumulated half-jars of whatever-it-is and bags of moldy something or other.
I think if people did meal planning and simplified matters, they would waste a lot less food and eat fresher food to boot.
My frig is messed up now because I live with other people, but my ideal fridge would have a few bottles of fluids, a few sauces, some leftovers, leafy veggies, some meats, a big hunk of bamboo charcoal.. and then some frozen things. The way it is now, there are way too many half-used this and that items that are just cluttering things up.
BTW, look at the picture. Is that SIX big pet bottles on the doors? Two milk cartons, and then beer too? Sheesh. Bowl of salad in the main compartment? A big pot of what.. stew? Sheesh. Look how it is designed to DISPLAY feature items rather than provide ingredients conveniently. This is a refrigerator a husband/non-cooking spouse would love, but a cook would hate. Bizarre. It is a trough, not a pantry. Makes we want to say MOOO.

Point being that most of us could make do with a refrigerator HALF the size of the one we have now.
