advanced functionality that surpasses that of smartphones.

Huh? That makes no sense. Smartphones have thousands of apps, with nearly every kind of "functionality" imaginable. When I last had a Japanese handset, I couldn't even get my email!!!

It seems like it's back not to the future, but back to the past, for Japanese handsets.

Electric money. 10 mega-pixel HD camera / video. Face recognition... for starters my 'flip' does exactly that to your i.

You could can stick a jet engine on to a handset, but it doesn't make it more "advanced." "Electric money"? My Visa Card is way more advanced - highly compact, can be used worldwide and over the internet, no fees -- and the battery never wears out.

10 mega HD camera-video is really a gimmick. To get the right performance out of that resolution, it needs to be supported by a proper platform, such as a lens system.

Ah, yeah. Slapping out the credit card at the vending machine, as you pass through the train ticket gates, as you buy a sandwich at the store, sure. All credit cards welcome. The camera, is you have access to one, are good. But if 16 mega pixels are a 'gimmick' what's the i? Pathetic? Battery life, easy, you can take a spare and CHANGE it on your own or carry I couple of AAs and use your charger. Always in Japan there is solution to deemed 'problem'. Great sat-navi, great platforms for editing photos, video. Sweet as a flip-phone. Japn.inc.

What's the use of HD when the screen is so small?

It's all about apps and choices nowadays anyways. Like with computers. If there's something you wanna do, there's a choice of apps for it. Heck, I could play PS1 games on my phone, even with an external wireless controller, hahaha.

Japanese phones are so out there. The iPhone looks like a brick in comparison.

If only the phones could be used and sold for use Outdide of Japan!

Unfortunately, many JP phones are locked for use in JP mainly to the phone tech used in JP.

Make it a GSM model for worldwide use and the JP phone companies may do well in international sales with their phones!
