Happy flushing

It’s a testament to the refinements of the age we live in that the sound of urination is considered so vulgar that many Japanese women feel compelled to conceal it by flushing the toilet as they pee. If this doesn’t strike you as utterly bizarre, you might fall within the intended audience of Epoch’s Eco-Otome.

This tacky plastic cell phone fob emits the sound of running water at the push of a button, meaning that you can now preserve your feminine dignity without wasting a few liters of water in the process. Consider it a cheap and easy solution to a problem that we never even knew existed.

Eco-Otome, 315 yen. Available from pharmacies, toy stores and Amazon Japan.

Does it have a "turbo" button to mask the sound of No. 2's as well???

I've always thought it would be a great prank to rig the otohime to make loud flatulent noises intead of running water.

I wonder if it can do different chords depending on whether you drank beer or green tea...

Yet again great Japanese eco-friendly behaviour. Waste gallons of water, just to hide the sound of people peeing or letting one rip. Pathetic.

and as if that wasn't enough this piece of plastic, non-biodegradable crap too!

Could be embarrassing if it accidentally goes off in someone's LV handbag on a crowded train... (might "flush out" any would be gropers though :-))

This is great for playing pranks in Western countries...imagine playing it in the tube in London during rush hour or taking it with you to the cinema....definitely going to get one at this cheap cost...the fun you can have with it is something money can't buy.

bgudry - having a bad day or somethin'? IMHO this device shows exactly how eco-oriented Japanese are - solving a problem (even if it's not one for the gaijins) and saving "gallons of water"... OTOH I know I would have be better without hearing some guys here, farthing and sh**ting like diarrhoeic horses on a bad day. Helps keeping the food from flying away the wrong hole...

ebisen - solving a non-existent problem by producing more waste. Japanese ingenuity at its best.

Not even a rechargeable battery?

And yet the Japanese love their farting competitions...

What a good idea. Do you know if they have a range of products for real men. Every Friday night down the pub, I sometimes become acutely aware of who might be listening when I am talking to god on the great white telephone.

saw the same thing mounted in restaurant bathrooms 15 years ago

good point, how about another version which made a loud coughing noise, which could used in those embarrassing situations like having to let one rip in a board meeting... any takers?

The ladies, assuming only ladies are natural-sound-shy, could use their cell phone which has this Relaxation Time feature. It plays several nice melodies, like Relax, Sleep, Refresh, Healing, Cheer, etc. Perfect to mask the sound of P-ing :-)

Can I have a different one that makes noisy sounds :)

Should be sold in set with a head to toe burka to enter the bathroom incognito. I heard there's gonna be a heavy duty 'Niagara roar' version for those pesky number twos.

Japan is a weird country. Women can't be even heard peeing, but it's perfectly OK to build facilities for men so you have to pee in the full view of any passers-by while the cleaning lady is busy with the next urinal while you're trying to shake off the last drops. I just hope the makers of eco-otome can come up with an equally eco-friendly invisibility cloaca cloaks.

That's always amazed me too. I think it's a case of selective blindness...
