Subway in Japan has been known to have some pretty unique sandwiches, and with recent special additions to their menu, it seems like their motto is “Go big or go home.” A sandwich is not a sandwich if you can actually taste the bread, apparently.
That’s probably what Subway was thinking when they introduced the “Infinite Destroyer” to their branch at the University of Tokyo. With a name like that, you might assume it’s going to be insanely spicy or impossible to finish (which it may very well be for some), but it might actually be the infinite destroyer of cows, because this sandwich is stuffed to the brim with a whopping 25 slices of roast beef.
There are four varieties of the Destroyer, depending on your level of hunger (and probably how much you like roast beef). The first level, simply called the Destroyer, has only twice the regular amount of beef, presumably just 10 slices. At the next level, is the King Destroyer, with three times as much roast beef, followed by the God Destroyer with four. Naturally, the Infinite Destroyer is the father of all the Destroyers, at five times the ordinary amount of roast beef in a Subway sandwich.
Of course, the price goes up with each additional serving of roast beef, starting at 920 yen for the Destroyer and culminating at 1,940 yen for the Infinite Destroyer. And that’s only for a 6-inch sub!
It’s no surprise that such a sandwich would exist, since in Japan roast beef is considered a popular delicacy. You can even get whole towers of roast beef at some restaurants! If you’re wondering why it’s only available at the University of Tokyo, well, no one knows for sure, but it might be because the sandwich probably has enough servings to feed two or three people, so three poor students can split one of these Herculean sandwiches for roughly six bucks each.

I really do wish that Japanese branches of international restaurants like Subway would put a bit more effort into vegetarian choices. You only need a bit of imagination. I've had delicious veggie patties, etc at overseas branches.

3 poor students could also buy any other 6" sub for 600 yen and it would probably be more filling than a 3rd of a 6" even if it is piled with meat. Especially when you order it with max salad.

Looks amazing but that price.. The standard roast beef definitely does not have enough though

I live near Todai and went there yesterday after reading this article and got the one with double meat. On the bill it was itemized as a roast beef sub with an extra serving of roast beef. No special price so this can be gotten at any Subway. Just a misleading marketing campaign; and the sub wasn't that good either.

Herculean? Infinite Destroyer? Please. In Chicago or New York, they simply call a sandwich with this much beef a "beef sandwich."

Severely overpriced as most things in Japan. Going to Subway in Japan, half the time when they ask what toppings you want (if they even ask at all), they rarely pay attention and assume you want everything. Would love Subway to be the first fast food eatery staffed solely by robots (actual ones, not human).

I've always been asked what toppings I want. It seems like that would be the natural progression from asking which bread you want, which they basically have to ask.
They are a bit overpriced here though, and they're really stingy with the veggies even when you ask for extra.

Agreed. I get asked if and when I go. The problem here, I find, is that unless you tell them to "keep going" with the toppings they'll put on the minimal they've been instructed. One guy put two olive slices on my sandwich once when I said put everything on it, until I asked him to put a lot more on. Then he did. They'll put more on in general back home, but won't necessarily put more if you ask. Depends on the server.
Free as well with the price. It isn't just overpriced, it's ridiculous. I don't know if they still have stamp cards, but they did when I came here. Five foot-longs back home and you get a freebie. Here you needed 25 to get one... and I think that was a 6". But, when in Rome... At least they taste like back home a bit, which is nice if you want a taste of that.

MrBum: It's dependent upon location, employee and sheer luck (or lack thereof). As I'm in the greater Yokohama area, there's been plenty of instances (lost track because of the frequency) in which the natural progression that you mentioned ended once we got to "MY" supposed choice of toppings. I have noticed when this problem occurs, it's usually with a young female employee. Responding to her question, it's not an overwhelming answer...onions, lettuce and green peppers. And I always stand there watching as she instantly reaches for the tomatoes, and various other items that I never asked for nor wanted.
I'm always curious to know why some fast food places, such as McDonalds have roughly the same prices as in the USA when I've been there for vacation/work. But places like Taco Bell are 10x higher. And specific to Taco Bell, when signing the licensing agreement, did Taco Bell USA not stipulate that the menu items must consist of a certain high percentage of standard fare, in addition to the "only in Japan" items?

smithinjapan: I'm pretty sure they stopped doing stamp cards completely :( Might be a locational thing too though.

I don't much like fast food in general but I love subway. I almost cried when I found out they had turkey breast. Growing up I lived close to a french sandwich shop that absolutely overdosed their customers on raw and pickled veggies and I miss it every day. Subway is as close as can get in Japan so I'll pay the slightly unreasonable price once in a while lol

My fav is turkey breast or avocado shrimp but in Japan they charge extra for a slice of cheese, unlike in Malaysia or China where it is included in standard price. Wish they also sold healthy drinks (yogurt for example), not just this fizzy coke stuff...

They won't bring the Italian BMT here. That was their signature sandwich back in the 80's. Wish I knew the reason.
