Japan’s cat-shaped bread slices return with new watermelon flavor

Japan is no stranger to cat-shaped bread. One baked goods company in Japan, All Hearts Company, even came up with a brand dedicated solely to feline-inspired bread. The brand is called Neko Neko Shokupan, with neko being the word for “cat” in Japanese, and shokupan being the word for fluffy, white bread.

The brand’s original cat-shaped bread first came out towards the end of 2019, and since then, they’ve been more creative in their flavors -- from matcha and black kitten varieties, to releasing a cheesecake version as well.

The newest addition to the Neko Neko Shokupan line takes inspiration from a popular Japanese summertime snack: the watermelon. The bread comes in the form of a loaf, and the exterior of the bread is green and striped, just like a watermelon.

Once sliced open, the bread is bright red in color and is sprinkled with chocolate chips to replicate the look of watermelon seeds.

The watermelon cat-shaped bread is only available through All Hearts Company’s online store, until July 31. It’s sold as a set that also comes with one loaf of the plain cat-shaped bread and two chocolate pens used to draw on the bread. The total price for the set is 3,400 yen.
