Japan’s newest potato chip flavor: Convenience store fried chicken

By Casey Baseel, SoraNews24

There are all sorts of ways Japanese convenience stores earn the “convenient” part of their name. They’ve got branches all over, for example, so you’re hardly ever more than a short walk away from one, and they’re open 24 hours a day, ready to provide you with food and drink at any time of day or night.

Recently, though, FamilyMart is proving itself to be especially convenient by letting us satisfy two cravings at once. It has released its Mos Burger teriyaki burger steamed bun, and now it’s teaming up with snack maker Calbee to combine two more things we love: potato chips and fried chicken.

It’s not just any fried chicken that’s serving as the flavor inspiration for these new chips, either. The taste is specifically modeled after Famichiki, FamilyMart’s cooked-in-store brand of boneless fried chicken that’s one of the chain’s biggest sellers.

▼ Famichiki, whose packaging proudly proclaims “I am Chicken” along with “Taste of soft, juicy chicken. The boneless type.”

This is actually Calbee’s second time to offer Famichiki-inspired chips, but they promise that the new recipe is even better than the old one, with an even more authentic recreation of Famichiki’s seasoning right down to the spicy aftertaste that lingers on your tongue and compels you to take another bite.

The new Famichiki chips are priced at 168 yen and go on sale at FamilyMart locations nationwide on Tuesday. Considering that Famichiki itself is so popular that FamilyMart had to ration it last fall, we’ll be trying to grab a bag for ourselves ASAP.

I really miss the unusual potato chip flavors in Asia. Angry Spice Prawn is good. We can get them back home, but only at 10x the price in a specialty international foods market.

Hard to call any potato chips "food", however.

With my high blood pressure and heart condition I will still try these potato chips that smell like chicken. I love potato chips.

Wow!

I've never noticed the long lines waiting for a taste of convenience store chicken-sushi ok-chicken…no.

Flavours 'added' are chemical poisons. Do we need 'pleasant' poisons?

I really hope this new recipe is better because the old one was terribly bad, I like the proper famichiki and was expecting the chips to be at least simmilar in flavor, but they tasted stale and oily.

For me the best ones that have came lately were the "Strong abare shizo ume", as the name indicates quite strong flavor (big on the vinegary side, so not for everybody) but surprisingly good.

I'll take old fashioned potato chips that tase like potatoes, if I want fried chicken that's what I'll buy.
