Keep your fridge cool

The humble refrigerator is one of your home’s biggest energy hogs, second only to the air conditioner in the amount of electricity it guzzles every month. What’s more, up to a quarter of that wasted energy comes just from opening and closing the door. So with the warm weather approaching, you can save yourself a few yen by investing in one of Reina’s Keep Cool Curtains. Available in three patterns, these drapes fix to the inside of your fridge, preventing too much cold air from escaping as you dither over whether to have natto or raw eggs for breakfast. Go on: have both. (Metropolis)

that actually sounds like a good idea

I just wonder how much they get it the way though.

I might give them a try if I ever see them.

What I do now is just turn my fridge way low, especially the freezer bit, its on the lowest setting possible. I wish I could just disconnect it because I don't freeze anything anyway.

Actually I had this at home, and I hated it. With these curtains and a usually cramped fridge, it takes longer to put things in or take things out, so the energy saving is only marginal.

with the money saved, you could afford to cook the eggs ; )

It stops a blast of cold air hitting you when you open the fridge in the summer... which is sometimes disappointing - but proves it does something.

I take it off in the winters tho :p

After opening and closing, the second biggest energy hog is storing too many things inside. Appliances like TVs and copiers should be disconnected from the mains when not in use, as they consume energy in their quiescent modes as well. When in doubt, pull it out!

When you pull the plugs out you quite lose all of the settings and everything else that you pain painstakingly set up...Have you ever had your main breaker kick off in your house? Can take hours resetting everything.
