Kirin releases fat-busting cola

Beverage maker Kirin is selling the first ever health food cola. The drink is called Kirin Mets Cola. No connection to the MLB team, although fans will find the font suspiciously familiar.

According to the company, the drink contains an indigestible form of dextrin sometimes used as a fiber supplement, which restricts the body’s ability to absorb fat while eating. It contains no sweeteners and has strong carbonation for a refreshing feel. They also claim that blood tests performed in house after consuming the beverage prove the drink keeps levels of neutral fats low after eating.

An increasing health consciousness, particularly among 30-something males, combined with the indisputable fact that high-calorie, delicious foods like hamburgers, pizza and chips just cry out for a cola accompaniment, has led to the development of this fat-busting drink.

The company says its target demographic is guys who love cola but are worried about their weight, as well as former customers who have stopped buying soft drinks for health reasons. With Mets Cola, they hope to welcome them back with open arms.

You’ll be able to spot this dieter’s delight by its eye-catching red logo on a black field. The suggested retail price is 150 yen for a 480mL bottle.

Sweetener and sugar are not the same

Aspartame is like the devil itself. Nasty, nasty stuff.

My question is, will stopping the absorption of fat cause the "Olestra effect"?

Out of curiosity I tried some from my local combini this morning. It wasn't actually that as bad as I had expected. I know that's hardly a stunning endorsement, but I despise diet colas and could drink this one without gagging.

This looks yummy!! Much better then the coke zero crap which makes false claims just to sell more products. As far as diet products go they are worse then people realize. According to the Mayo Clinic. Products that are basically sugar water, or fake sugar water, actually have a negative effect on the hydration of our bodies. People should be drinking at least 8 full glasses of water daily, and when you factor in the soda consumption you will have to drink up to ten. Not to mention many diet drinks have the artificial sweetener, aspartame. There are over 92 different health side effects associated with aspartame consumption. It seems surreal, but true. How can one chemical create such chaos? Aspartame dissolves into solution and can therefore travel throughout the body and deposit within any tissue. The body digests aspartame unlike saccharin, which does not break down within humans. There is an enormous population suffering from side effects associated with aspartame, yet have no idea why drugs, supplements and herbs do not relieve symptoms.

It depends on the person though as some aren't effected at all. Even these individuals are susceptible to the long-term damage caused by excitatory amino acids, phenylalanine, methanol, and DKP. While artificial sweeteners and other chemicals currently used in diet soda are safe for most people, and there's no credible evidence that these ingredients cause cancer. Some types of diet soda are even fortified with vitamins and minerals. Diet soda isn't a health drink or a silver bullet for weight loss. Although switching from regular soda to diet soda may save you calories, some studies suggest that drinking more than one soda a day regular or diet increases your risk of obesity and related health problems such as type 2 diabetes. So in contrast it is hard to say this will be all that beneficial. Let's just hope enough research has been done on this product to back up it's claims and not mislead the pubic. I might try it though just for taste test purposes. Who knows I guess.

After reading these comments, I shall now go back to my glass of red wine...

Or how about just stop drinking soft drinks... they can't ever be healthy.

an indigestible form [of] dextrin

Indigestiblicious!

2 ( +4 / -2 )

So you're supposed to eat it with fatty foods, because it magically makes your body not absorb the fat? Interesting claim, but I wonder why they are marketing this to guys. Aren't women the predominant demographic when it comes to buying dieting goods? Not that men aren't becoming increasingly weight-conscious, too. Are normal diet products too emasculating for men or something?

YUM! Just looked up "dextrin" on Wiki:

Yellow dextrins are used as water-soluble glues [5] in remoistable envelope adhesives and paper tubes, in the mining industry as additives in froth flotation, in the foundry industry as green strength additives in sand casting, as printing thickener for batik resist dyeing, and as binders in gouache paint.

White dextrins are used as:

a crispness enhancer for food processing, in food batters, coatings, and glazes, (E number 1400) a textile finishing and coating agent to increase weight and stiffness of textile fabrics a thickening and binding agent in pharmaceuticals and paper coatings.

As pyrotechnic binder and fuel, they are added to fireworks and sparklers, allowing them to solidify as pellets or "stars."

Due to the rebranching, dextrins are less digestible; indigestible dextrin are developed as soluble fiber supplements for food products.

"Gots to haves my morning Dextrin Flakes®! They're INDIGESTABLE!"

Umm, how about drinking water?

If you want to reduce fat intake stop stuffing your face with it .Hippocrocapigs are more in evidence on the streets of Tokyo thanks to the love affair with cakes and junk food. Kirin`s latest chemical concoction will not make an iota of difference.

Just another diet coke for people to have with their chocolate cake. they should just rename it "Oxymoron Cola"

It sounds ghastly. A nice cup of refreshing tea has almost no calories, won't make your teeth fall out or give you cancer and is far cheaper too.

1 ( +6 / -5 )

Oh, the irony.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

so if i drink that with my usual dose of fastfood, pizza and ramen, i will lose weight?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Girls tend to drink green tea, chinese tea, and of course....royal milk tea!

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Guaranteed it tastes like sh!t...Kirin can't make any tasty beverages other than beer, all their other drinks are crap. Sorry Kirin, but them's just the facts!

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Will someone ever catch on and figure out that the miracle promises these drinks make are bogus? Nah. It'll have a sales spike and then be replaced by the next magic elixir.

selling the first ever health food cola

And they will next start selling the first ever acne-fighting, sun tanning, toenail clipping cola...

Man that is great..... but how much fat is cut from this drink? What if for some reason istarloosing too much weight? Is that good?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Chemical Soup.

0 ( +5 / -5 )

Hmmm if I combine this with my Alli (orlistat) fat pill, I'll lose even MORE weight?!? Orlistat prevents some of the triglycerides (dietary fat) you eat from converting to diglycerides which then get used to create body fat.

Hmm I wonder what the triglycerides will do with all this dextrin I'm adding? (Burp!)

New York Mets should take legal action on the word "Mets" with same italic fonts. The "Mets" has been around since the early '60's. The Kirin is like the Chinese companies that don't understand the copyright names. Kirin couldn't come up with original name on their own? No wonder they are a failure in the beer industry.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Darling, that's positively indigestible!

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Kirin Mets has been around since the 1970's and the name is derived from the word Metropolitans. Of course the NY Mets derived their name from the old New York Metropolitans. If you look at the M in the Kirin logo, it is different from the M in the NY Mets logo. In the long run, who really cares...

As I read through the comments I couldn't help but notice that all most every comment had at least one negative vote, WHY? Just about every one of the 27 comments before mine told the truth. To be honest who cares about the copyright stuff over the name.

This stuff is going to be marketed to 30-something males, to me that means that my generation (50-something) has failed to teach our male children how to eat healthy. But it seems like every one is looking for an easy fix to being overweight so it will probably be a big success. Have to wonder about the long term health effects though, I had a co-worker a few years ago who admitted to drinking at least two 2-liter bottles of diet "Coke" a day, I wonder what a similar amount of this stuff would do to him? And yes he had the typical American beer gut so I'm sure he would be interested in this drink.

As previously stated . . . Eat and drink naturally healthy foods and drinks.

Much like when someone goes to Burger King and orders one of those monster burgers with a diet Coke, and thinks that's going to balance everything out in the end.

I don't get why people always make a comment about this. Diet cola has less calories and sugar in it than reg. It means less calories and sugar are consumed. Not a bad thing if someone wants to have a treat but not go hog wild with the drink.

That said, diet or not, colas are just nasty.

I just checked the nutritional info on a bottle and it contains Aspartam L - is Aspartam not considered a sweetener in Japan?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Oh wow... It's a wonder what humans can make out of petroleum.. I bet there is not a single natural ingredient in this chemical cocktail

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

Want to drop fat? Stop eating so much sugar, fat and crap and start moving. The rice in the bentos, the fried food, the mayo... not exactly promoting a healthy diet.

-1 ( +7 / -8 )

They also claim that blood tests performed in house after consuming the beverage prove the drink keeps levels of neutral fats low after eating

So does that mean they used their own employees as guinea pigs? And then they rip off the NY Mets for their logo. This could be a new low even for Japan and Kirin.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

YES!!!.. this is exactly what i have been looking for all my life!

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

That's a great copy line!

♫You can drink it without gagging♫

Think I'll pass.

Secret Coca Cola was the effect, who cares about health, it was a big global market - the effect on the user.

Healthy water, anyone use? We are crazy about effects.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Drink enough and you may suffer .....

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

Aren't women the predominant demographic when it comes to buying dieting goods?

Because men are usually the cola consumers and are on average more overweight than women?

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

combined with the indisputable fact that high-calorie, delicious foods like hamburgers, pizza and chips just cry out for a cola accompaniment,

Clearly 30-something Japanese males have become completely westernized. What happened to green tea or even a Kirin beer?
