This light beer from Kirin has just 19 calories per 100 ml and zero carbs. The beer contains just the right hops formula for a more authentic beer taste. The product is in response to consumer demand for a healthier alcoholic beverage. Kirin says it spent three years developing it. 141 yen per 350 ml can. On sale from Feb 23.

This is the most expensive 3rd category "beer" yet!
USAkuma
How much alcohol is in it? The Happoshu group of beverages are tolerable due to an increase in alcohol... I like the ones with 7%.
But a lot of the diet beers have only around 3% which means you have to pound 3 to 4 times the amount to get the same buzz, which nullifies the diet aspect.
bcbrownboy
Has anyone tasted it? Does it taste as cr@ppy as the other light beers?
Disillusioned
I am always amused by 'haposhu' being touted as beer. It is false and misleading advertising. It should be touted as 'a beer like substance'.
LoveUSA
This is the best beerin Japan.

bcbrownboy.
Last line in article. ;)

Disillusioned - This is not happoshu, it's 3rd category. You can tell by the "Osake" label in the circle on the lower right of the can.
LoveUSA - Why do you say this is the best beer in Japan?
LoveUSA
I like it, my personal choice of beer. I seldom like the featured goods here, this is one I like.
sidesmile
Anyone who enjoys beer would never even glance at this rubbish.
Junnama
When will they bring malt liquor to japan ???
mrtestsworth
LoveUSA, you seriously need to wake up. Do you realize how many skillful brewers are working hard to produce genuinely good Japanese beer instead of this mass produced garbage? I assume you have tried Shiga Kougen, Yokohama Brewing, Swan Lake, Iwate Kura, Bairds ??
I'll give you a clue where to find the best beer in Japan- it's not at your local Combini.
Sarge
LoveUSA, could you please tell us where you got this stuff, since it's not on sale until Feb 23?
paulinusa
Not many more calories than water.
HermioneGranger
19 calories per 100ml?! How is that light in any way? If it was in a pet bottle, that'd be almost 100 calories per bottle, which is quite a bit.
LoveUSA
jealous that I can drink it before you? I do not know why this is announced as new. i always buy Kirin0糖質 beer at supermarket.
koriyamaboy
Darn! I was hoping this was a real light beer. Why can`t Japan have one of those. Some of the light beers in Canada and the U.S. are quite drinkable. The ones in Japan are not.
nandakandamanda
LoveUSA, you are talking about the regular Kirin beer with Zero Carbohydrates, not this new 'Koi-Aji' stuff which took three years to create, and which also happens to have zero carbs.
LoveUSA
Ok, if it is better than what I usually buy, then the taste would really be great.
sctaber56
Sounds like another word for "water"...
sctaber56
Or just drink a cold glass of water if one is looking for a "healthier beverage"
MottoMatto
What's next? A 0 calorie Big Mac? Only if it's made out of paper...
sctaber56
Or recycled cardboard and plastic "chiizu"
BurakuminDes
It is most certainly not "beer". In fact, it quite possibly isn't even happoshu. It is likely imitation happoshu. Avoid at all costs!
LoveUSA
it is one of those drinks for 10 year old kids, not for real men.
Sarge
Thanks to nanda, I know what LoveUSA is talking about now. I tried that Kirin 0糖質last summer, that is zero carb happoshu with 3% alcohol. Drinkable, but pretty light.
LoveUSA
drinkable? It is the best taste i have ever experienced. If this is only drinkable, what is good for you?
Sarge
Love, I imagine your happoshu ( it's around 150 yen, right? ) is probably better than this new stuff coming out Feb 23.
LoveUSA
Anyway, anybody who contributed on this article and who said that light beer is bad, needs to clean and detox their liver.
paulinusa
It has 67 calories per 350 ml. can. There are a few on the market(US and Euro beers) that I know of with less calories but not many. Never drink light beers when I'm in Japan, so how does this compare calorie wise with other lights there?
somuchtalent
Happoushu rocks! if you wanna drink beer pay for it and stop complaining. if you want something cheaper but still tastes ok go with it! $1 a can, I expect it taste to the value of $1... That's good enough! If I feel like a real beer i pay double for it! whatever! get over it! you get what you pay for
Love Kirin
USAkuma
I have to agree with somuchatalent. If I want real bear, I pay for real beer, and it doesn't come from Japan. If I want a cheep alcoholic drink that isn't sweet, then I get a happoshu alchoholic drink.
Since my wife is demanding that I lose some weight, I will have to cut back on the good stuff. Now, if this or other diet, alcoholic, malt-like beverages can taste better than water or other diet drinks, then I am all for it.
Instead of pointing out the obvious that this isn't a real beer, let's compare diet malt-beverages and decide which tastes the best. LoveUSA likes Kirin. I tried that 0stuff, and its not as bad as the green label stuff. Any other constructive comparisons?
nandakandamanda
If you suffer from gout, then get the low-purine stuff.
herefornow
USAkuma -- sorry, but I don't see giving any of this swill positive comments as being "constructive". The fact is that none of it would exist if the country were not stuck in a two-decade-long decline and folks could afford a decent style of life. This shows a defeatist attitude on behalf of the companies and consumers -- "Well, we'll all just have to settle for flavored dishwater." I mean this isn't war time or anything where rationing and other sacrifices are required. It is simply a result of total incompetence by the government, and lack of any back-bone on the people's part. Too much "Shoganai" for me.
LoveUSA
Herefornow,
Actually the government and the companies think about you. If you drink healthy drinks, you won't need a liver transplant at the age of 40.
GW
These drinks are poison, consume at yr own risk! God awful stuff! I remember when this happoshu first came out there were a couple I cud stomach but then the cost & taste have spiralled down & continues.
This crap is just an indicator of how far Jpn is falling, yuck!
In case you folks dont know there are european non-alcohol beers that are cheap & taste WAY WAY better than this crap! And if you need the buzz factor just ad a bit of shochu, but dont buy the poison that comes in multilitre petbottles as that stuff is as nasty as these lousy fake beers
iPodiPadiPed
Beer: classless and tasteless..
KaptainKichigai
@LoveUSA- if the alcohol content is the same as beer it will have the same effect on the liver. HOWEVER, all of the chemicals, preservatives and flavors added to make it taste like a natural fermentation will likely rot out your stomach. Anyone who drinks beer as a hobby knows the impact fake beer has on the bowels as opposed to real beer.
LoveUSA
ok, Kichigai-kun. Your words are similar to those of Kumi-koda.
KaptainKichigai
im not disagreeing with you about the taste. if it works for you, more power to ya!
badmigraine
The solution is simple. Get the iPhone app "Beer in Japan". It will steer you to real, delicious beers here.
