From Victorinox Japan come these lightweight and durable polycarbonate suitcases. The suitcases feature the ergonomic “curved monopole handle system” which lessens the weight of the luggage, while the 360-degree rotating handle and grip allows a natural body position and stability of the suitcase when rolling.
Y-shaped compression straps securely hold items in place with removable mesh divider walls for custom packing according to the luggage size. Mesh divider pockets also enable convenient storage of small items.
Four sizes (from 3.5 to 6 kgs) are currently on sale: 18” (39,900 yen); 20” (46,200 yen); 24” (57,750 yen); 27” (63,000 yen).

Why are suitcases always so expensive? R&D costs? These things are more than likely made in china and can't possibly cost any more than 5000 or 6000 yen to produce.

The day is coming when size will matter on check in baggage costs.

Why are many things so expensive here? Because people are willing to pay through the nose without protest.

luggage that's more expensive than an airplane ticket...yeah where can i get some ?

In theory this is a good idea, although very few people exceed the weight restriction of 23 kg. But I'd like to know how much weight I'm saving for that premium price.

Just curious. Ever notice that 90% of Japanese travelers use hard plastic suitcases. Any thoeries why?

Samsonite are also very expensive! Top brands are expensive...
Anyway what's missing here is the... WEIGHT !!! The other sizes doesn't mater for checked in luggage that much - what's the weight?
Now that every gram counts and air companies are more strict we just get the teaser "lightweight" ?!

I always thought that it was to make sure the things inside didnt get squished. When I came over here I used two suitcases for all my things, and when I opened them back up some of the items inside were mashed and unusable. Ive been thinking about getting one of the plastic ones for myself, the look nice and they`d be good for if I go back to the states for a visit.

If the fact that they are lightweight is their main selling point, thus making it newsworthy, why isn't the weight mentioned in the article? Anyone know the stats on them?
some14some
may be advertiser knew once the reader sees price he/she wont ask for the weight or stats and move to next thread.
Moderator: The weight ranges from 3.5 kgs to 6 kgs.

It always helps to read the entire article:
At the end it reads: Four sizes (from 3.5 to 6 kgs) are currently on sale: 18” (39,900 yen); 20” (46,200 yen); 24” (57,750 yen); 27” (63,000 yen).

Could it be because it's a Japanese news article?

I have travelled worldwide for about 40 years and know the value of high quality and light weight cases. I have gone through many brands and types of bags. I now own 2 sets of the Victorinox cases, 1 for many years and a new set purchased this year. They last forever and the company stands behind any problems. You pay for what you get. Cardboard boxes are light weight and cheap too. ;)

I always exceed 23 kg whenever I travel back to the US. I see many people in the same situation. You gotta stock up while over there. This bag is definitely interesting as many of the bags out there are too heavy and thus limits the amount of items you can bring back.

Large suitcases average around 7 kg, I believe, which is 1/3 of your allowance gone already. Now make that 6 kg like these here, and you are saving at least...

These are still cheaper than my last set of Remowa's which are pretty light also... but I like my Remowa's.

Experience taught me it's worth investing some money on a high-quality carry-on. Check if these are Made in Japan - they are really good. And I don't know if you have traveled lately, but air carriers are becoming more and more bitchy about the 23 kg limit. I had a problem with JAL at the check-in counter, for 24 kg - just 1 kg beyond their limit.
