Exemode Corp will release a low-price 35mm film scanner through its Yashica brand on March 21. FS-500 features 5.04 mega-pixel CMOS sensor and fixed lens. The maximum scanning resolution is 3,600dpi. The scanner can be powered through USB connection. For Windows XP/Vista only.

The price is right, though I wonder about the resolution and extras like ICE. Perfectly idiotic that they did not make it Mac-compatible. I doubt very much that it will be as good as the higher-priced dedicated scanners. Anyway, glad to see that someone still takes film seriously.

Only 10% of people use Macs, so Windows-only is understandable. Anyway, cheap PC laptops now have better graphics than expensive Macs, according to a recent Yahoo test, so more photographers and other graphic workers will be switching to PCs in the future.

For Mac/Linux, you can bet driver support will be provided by VueScan. Even if the manufacturer won't bother supporting non-windows users, VueScan usually does...
