Outside of Japan, Calpis is marketed as Calpico which sounds a lot better. When I first visited Japan and was asked by a Japanese factory worker if I wanted to drinl what sounded like the urine of bovine animals I was shocked until I read the can and understood the Engrish problem. Calpis or Calpico is good stuff. Another funny Japanese popular drink is Pocari Sweat which I first thought was the sweat of a small South American mammal that resembles a large rodent. It too is pretty good but it is too bad that Japanese companies don't put a little more time into testing their Engrish product names outside of Japan before they settle on odd names. In the USA Toyota sells the Venza wagon which my J-wife says sounds like "benza" or toilet seat in Japanese. What is the Venza called in Japan?

@flyingfish Yeah, I thought the same thing. The only thing new is prolly the 200ml cans. I've always seen them in bottles.

I love mango flavored anything, but I hate Calpis. Hmm. I might have to make an exception for this...

Everything with mango is a hit.

Except the juice!

My local supermarkets got rid of the Tropicana mango juices a few months ago. It was the best. Sick of the usual orange, apple and grape and I don't like grapefruit juice. Can't wait for Indian mangoes to appear.

I really hate how summer brings a million stupid mango-flavored products.

Calpis. Stupid name. Enshrined Forever in Japan. Admittedly, a great drink, especially in the heights/depths of summer. I'm willing to try mango variations.

Calpis was supposedly inspired by the kumis (mare's milk) imbibed on the Mongolian steppes. The "cal" refers to calcium and the "pis" comes from the Sanskrit word for tasty. Or so I read once, in Jean Pearce's column in the Japan Times, an aeon ago.

You cannot get Calpis Soda in the states. My brother has been searching for it and it is not there.

I'm sure it depends on what area you live in. You can get it in VA and HI for sure.

You can get it here in Utah so I'm sure you can get it in most states at the local asian market.

@goddog I'm sure you are able to get off the internet, they have online asian "markets".. Never ordered from one but.. just a thought. Occasionally I'll see it in my local sushi place, every couple of months. I make sure to buy a few when I see them, they're not very consisent in supply. I've seen them in larger Asian markets, and if you go to Walt Disney World in Orlando, EPCOT's World Showcase's Japan pavilion has an endless supply of Calpis Soda, and several flavours as well! Plenty of Japanese drinks and food there... I stock up when I go there.

Oh, and you're sure to find them in places with Japanese immigrants. If there are a "large" amount of immigrants around, you're sure to find some around. I'd imagine you can find it in Seattle.. My old neighborhood had a lot of Koreans, so therefore we had lots of Korean stores and thus, almost every single Korean brand you could imagine was crammed into them. Most likely the same for Japanese.
