Despite the beautiful packaging design most Japanese products have, I don't buy Mt Rainier coffee because the package uses an excessive amount of plastic. The plastic cap on this product serves no practical purpose other than to make the package look similar to a Starbucks brand drink. If Morinaga Milk really wants to save the rainforest, they should seriously consider using eco-friendly packaging.

I thought that was the whole point. I still remember the "bootleg Starbucks" I saw at the convenience store the first time I came to Japan.

Mt Rainier have been going for years! Who copied who?

Starbucks has been around for 40 years, so I'm pretty confident in saying that Mt. Rainier (Which is just a Morinaga brand) copied Starbucks. Even the name 'Mt. Rainier', which is a mountain in Washington, the state where Starbucks was founded, is a dead give-away.

With regards to the convenience store shelf coffee, Mt. Rainier came before Starbucks, I believe.

I agree with n3312, Mt. Rainier coffee was on the conbini store shelves a long time before Starbucks. Sure they copied the look and colors of Starbucks, a lot of other coffee places have too. I am from Seattle, and I was kind of happy to see the name Mt. Rainier. I think that Morinaga went a little too far though. Very few Japanese people can make the connection between Mt. Rainier and Seattle, and even the connection between Seattle and coffee. I love explaining to students that Starbucks, Seattle's Best Coffee, and Tully's all originated in Seattle. ( BTW Since about 2003 Seattle's Best Coffee has been a subsidiary of Starbucks.) FYI The best coffee beans in Seattle can be bought at "The Good Coffee Company" on Post Alley.

The granddaddy of trade mark infringement goes to an independent in Nagoya that used to be across the street from Chikusa-eki called Megabucks Coffee - same circular logo with green background, same white lettering. Only thing missing was the mermaid. They beat Starbucks to market in Japan by about 18-months. Had this been done in a nation with a real legal system, they would have been out of business is short order. However, last time I checked (a couple years back) they were still there.

An espresso or double espresso is a term to describe the extraction and timing of a shot…….calling this a double espresso is taking the piss….

I like Mt Rainier, I remember when it was sold at vending machines (those that you must push the number at which they're stocked) and I thought it wasn't cheap at the time, but now I think it's a more-than-reasonably priced iced coffee and tasty. Certainly beats can coffee.
