Naomi Osaka’s dream of having her own Barbie doll comes true

The past few months haven’t exactly been easy for Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka, but here’s one piece of positive news coming right in time for the Tokyo Olympics. On July 12, Mattel added a specially designed Naomi Osaka doll to their collection. The Grand Slam champion replica was designed by Carlyle Nuera, who has also designed Barbie Dolls in the past like Billie Jean King, Ella Fitzgerald, and more.

▼ She’s decked out in Nike gear.

The doll sports Osaka’s 2020 Australian Open outfit – a Nike tennis dress with a brushstroke print – and the doll itself comes with fully movable limbs, a visor, a tennis racket, a tennis ball, a sweatband, shoes, and a doll stand.

▼ Fans will surely love the doll’s natural curly hair, and it even has three freckles painted on its face that mimic the athlete’s own.

The doll is available for $29.99 on Barbie’s online shop, and there’s a limit of two dolls per customer. Since the doll is so popular, it may be difficult to catch it in stock for a while, but you can sign up for restock alerts.

▼ Osaka said in an Instagram post about the collaboration that she hoped it would remind any child that “they can do and be anything”.

I thought she didn’t want the attention. It’s all about the money.

I thought she didn’t want the attention. It’s all about the money.

She has nervous issues. Even tho the Barbie Doll will be a 'For A Limited time', Naomi is making the most of it. Nothing wrong with that. Of course, doll collectors, girls and tennis fans (black, mixed, whatever) will want to get theirs. If this inspires girls, non-white, etc. in tennis then so be it. Inspiration is good.

Oh no……more money in her pocket from royalties……poor baby…..life must be so rough for her…..

This Naomi-chan appears to be fairly well-articulated. - So is her accompanying Tweet

And, there are ‘no strings’ to pull and ‘make’ her talk.

Btw, Shannon-san, SoraNews24, this doll is NOT a “Barbie Doll”. Naomi Osaka clarifies in her Tweet: “I’m introducing the [ ] Naomi Osaka doll”. - She’s her own person! She doesn’t need you & others to force [“Barbie”] as her [“Role Model”].

It’s her dream. This is her dream. Really?!

Judges will most like call “*Fault*on your 1st observation *@Mr.Kipling 1:04pm *(and probably toss it off-court)

“The doll has [redacted] . I hope Naomi speaks up about this "false image for girls".

However, your 2nd observation is a reasonable issue for Naomi Osaka to address as a “Role Model”. - “Point” taken.

Sell the doll but cancel the interviews…

Just what the world has been waiting for; a 'No Interviews Barbie'.

Why did they have to make the doll following the usual "skinny and big eyed" style. This sends the wrong message to girls that they have to be thin and cute. Naomi is a strong successful woman. Not a kawaii, doe eyed doll. But I guess the merchandising royalties are what's important.

The doll is literally ‘voiceless’ so, others ‘will have to do the talking for her’. (figuratively; ‘so to speak’; etc.)

I always preferred action man with moving eyes and gripping hands.

I found Barbie, sort of, Stepford doll creepy, designed to do the washing up, at one point was expecting a prego clip on accessory, with a full range of Barbie kitchen utensils.

Whatever floats your boat I guess.

I'm always amazed how any subject on Naomi Osaka triggers some people.

Anyway, carry on...

I'm always amazed how any subject on Naomi Osaka triggers some people.

The right wingers see her name, and take it as an opportunity to signal to others that they are virtuous conservatives. Her name triggers them into feeling a necessity to virtue signal to other conservatives so that everyone knows they have conservative virtue.

And some of these 'conservatives' have an underlying problem deep within. She's a uh-ahem not a sexy white girl, coff! coff!

Naomi is in the limelight because she's good at tennis and is a star. She wants to have the focus on her athletic capability, that speaks volumes enough. And as for the doll, if it inspires then that's OK. She's in the limelight and she's making the most of it. She might even make it on a Wheaties box. She is now a STAR but she wants to be one in her own way. And there's nothing wrong with that.
