New Lumix boasts world’s fastest auto focus

Panasonic will release a digital SLR camera, the Lumix DMC-GH2, on Oct 29. The camera has the world’s fastest auto focus at approximately .1 second. The camera captures images and movies in high-vision. Video will play at 60 frames-per-second, 2.5 times faster than the previous model. The camera is capable of taking 3D images with the appropriate (sold separately) lens, with the resulting images and movies viewable via HDMI on a 3D enabled TV. Open pricing.

Lumix gives you all these wonderful features and PR, but will not let us have English menus.

If you ask for English menus, they tell you can't have them if you buy the camera in Japan. Lumix sells crippled cameras in Japan.

Sounds like they are really going after those clueless newbies who thinks that expensive cameras automatically takes good pictures, or videos...What is this exactly, by the way --a video camera or a DSLR?

Not that 0.1 second compared to 0.12 seconds on a Canon or Nikon is going to make the slightest difference whatsoever... still, every camera needs something "original" (i.e. a gimmick) to sell it, so world's fastest auto-focus it is.

The biggest problem with Lumix cameras is not the camera itself, but the very small and expensive range of lenses available for it.

If the GH1 is anything to judge by, this will be a wonderful camera.

Beautiful images and beautiful video with interchangeable lens flexibility in a package much smaller than an SLR.

If you don't need video you'll probably look elsewhere, but if you are (like me) a parent who is sick and tired of lugging round an SLR and a camcorder then this camera will be an excellent solution.

Seriously, the video is simply awesome and you can also take really great still pics.

@gaijintraveller - This is exactly an irritant for me too. Panasonic (and Sony) intentionally do NOT provice multi-language menus in their cameras for market segmentation reasons. I can read the Japanese but it is an irritant. I hacked the firmware for my GH1 to be able to not only use the english menus but to attain shooting in Mbps rates that the camera is capable of but Panasonic won't give you.

@imacat - I agree. If you want video as well as good photographic capability, the GH1 is one of the hottest selling cameras in Europe and America. Standard DSLRs which have to deal with the flippety-floppety mirror locking up, you have no choice basically but to use the live view on the back screen when shooting video. This is an awkward way to shoot video without an OVF or EVF. I treat video equally, if not more so, important these days just as much as photography. So yes, those who want video, and smooth video at 60fps, then the GH1 or 2 are the cameras to have / get.

look close nylex 4 it says ".1" the point is small but makes abig difference.

My new Panasonic vid camera has English menus, why not Lumix? crazy logic behind that one.

But does it do continuous AF in video mode? If it can't, then you can't use it as easily as a camcorder.

After my Canon 20D's autofocus broke, I started to take much better pictures (with manual focus, and full manual controls). Using manual will make the photographer stop and think about what they are doing (as opposed to snapping like maniacs 2-3 thousands shots a day)...

This is NOT an SLR! Would the people who write tech articles kindly learn what terms mean before writing? Interchangeable lenses =/= SLR.

Pestronika - you're right - there is no mirror in this camera :).
