Nikon COOLPIX P7700 digital compact camera

Nikon Corp has released the P7700, a high-performance compact digital camera loaded with a number of functions that allow users to enjoy full-scale photography similar to that possible with a digital-SLR camera.

The P7700 is the newest flagship model for the COOLPIX series. It supports full-scale manual photography as well as system expansion, allowing users to brush up on their camera techniques that digital-SLR cameras require. The P7700 is the successor to the P7100, released in September 2011, and offers a number of advances over its predecessor, including faster continuous shooting and even better image quality with shooting at high sensitivities.

It is equipped with a large 1/1.7-inch backside illumination CMOS sensor, and a fast NIKKOR lens that supports 7.1x optical zoom. Its built-in lens-shift vibration reduction (VR) function increases imaging opportunities by enabling capture of not only beautiful still images, but also crisp and clear full-HD movies in dark or dimly lit surroundings.

The bright and fast NIKKOR lens supports 7.1x optical zoom covering a range of focal lengths from 28 mm to 200 mm (equivalents in 35-mm [135] format) and offering maximum apertures of f/2–4. It also supports macro photography from distances as close as approximately 2 cm, as well as fast telephoto shooting. What's more, it offers excellent rendering for beautiful expression of blur. The combination of this high-performance lens and the 1/1.7-inch backside illumination CMOS sensor with an effective pixel count of 12.2-million pixels enables even better image quality with shooting at high sensitivities, and high-speed continuous shooting at approximately 8 fps

The P7700 is also equipped with a movie custom setting mode with which settings such as shutter speed and ISO sensitivity can be specified, making the most of the advantages and capabilities of the fast lens and backside illumination CMOS sensor, for even more ways to express yourself through full-HD movies with superior picture quality.

The camera supports a number of accessories that extend possibilities and increase flexibility with shooting in a variety of situations, including Nikon Speedlights, which can be used for multiple flash-unit photography with Advanced Wireless Lighting, the GPS Unit GP-1, which records position information with images as they are captured, and the Remote Cord MC-DC2, which makes releasing the shutter easier when the camera is mounted on a tripod (accessories sold separately).

Sounds like they cut and pasted direct from Nikon's website. (but that's OK, they are my favorite photography company)

Its Canon or Fujiflim for me. Never been a fan of Nikon, I don't know why.

A decade ago Nikon P&S digital cameras were the cream of the crop - unfortunately they lost the plot somewhere along the line (probably around the time they started focusing on consumer DSLRs) and ever since their point and shoots have been plagued by average image quality and slow AF speeds. I'd recommend a Nikon DSLR to anyone, but a P&S to no-one.

I don't know... It's big and bulky. I love the dials, but IMO if you're going to spend this much on a "high-end p&s" you're better off spending a bit more and getting a Canon G1X or Sony RX100, both of which have much bigger sensors that'll show real improvement in picture quality over the 7700, which is still using the small 1/1.7" sensor.

???eh? they were rubbish!, their SLR were and still are great. Their P&S cameras were always breaking - the lens mechanisms.

@ CaveDweller

The Nikon Coolpix 990 was a classic, that even today would probably give most P&S cameras a run for their money optically. (Albeit ISO, focus speed, megapixel wise it is far outdated) I still have it's baby brother, the 880, and honestly for still macro it takes sharper photos than my 1 year old Canon IXY (AF is painfully slow though). Nikon used to put good glass in their P&S cameras, now they are sub-standard. With the advent of micro four thirds, I don't really see the point of these "high-performance" compacts that cost about the same price.
