Pepsi launches new cola specifically made for Christmas fried chicken in Japan

While Pepsi certainly has a lot of adventurous Japan-exclusive flavors, this year's release of a special formula Pepsi Zero designed to specifically be paired with karaage, Japanese-style fried chicken, may have been their most interesting yet. We actually had a chance to sit down and do a taste test and see if it actually paired as perfectly with some crispy karaage as advertised.

Pepsi is following that up this winter with a Japanese Christmas-seasonal flavor that may not sound that different at first glance but actually is: Pepsi Zero Karaage Senyo Cola, or Pepsi Zero Cola Exclusively for Fried Chicken.

But wait, "isn't that the same thing?" you may ask, and it's completely reasonable to do so. However, there is actually a key difference between fried chicken and karaage (whether you season the flour or season the meat). The "fried chicken" used here is referring specifically to American-style fried chicken, which is somewhat traditionally enjoyed as a Christmas meal in Japan (particularly KFC). That's why this Pepsi made for pairing with fried chicken is being billed as a Christmas dinner beverage.

While we've yet to give it a proper taste test (it's being released on Tuesday), the Pepsi Zero Cola Exclusively for Fried Chicken is said to be lemon flavored to make it a refreshing pairing with the fried Christmas favorite, and zero calorie so that you can focus on pigging out on fried chicken to your heart's content. Featured on the label is a sizzling batch of crispy fried chicken, and the new flavor will only be available in "big" 600ml bottles.

Chicken is Christmas fare in Japan.

Did you accidentally mash up two ad pitches?

The first taste test was for another Pepsi Zero, not the upcoming lemon one.

No it wasn't, there's a whole article linked, with pictures and everything.

The confusion comes from the article that made the mistake of describing the newest flavor as "Pepsi Zero Karaage Senyo Cola", but this is the name of the previous one that they already tasted.

The new one actually is "Pepsi Zero furaido chikin senyo cola" and it comes out tomorrow, so the writers have not yet tasted it.

George: "Chicken is Christmas fare in Japan.'

Well, OK, but hardly an organic, longstanding tradition. I assume they just got in with a good sales promotion, just like the ridiculous chocolate madness on 14 February and 14 March. Sorry, not worthy of respect.

The Pepsi in the taste test link is called からあげ専用コーラ and the one above is フライドチキン専用コーラ, very similar but the latter has some lemon flavor.

Maybe not, but here we are. At least KFC has its Christmas-only whole roast chicken (I'm doubtful that they have ovens just for three days a year though) and even offers gravy to go with it, all for the bargain price of somewhere north of ¥5,000. I haven't seen mince pies or Christmas pudding yet here, though stollen and panettone can generally be found in import stores and fancier bakeries. Pick up all that and some Brussel sprouts from the supermarket to go with your not-turkey, and there's your Christmas grub sorted. Pepsi goes well with anything not very healthy, though you can probably leave that Zero stuff until after you've made your New Year resolutions.

Ultrasugar y cola drinks that destroy the calcium in your bones, cause obesity, diabetes and cancer, in addition to reinforce a false celebration of what christmas really is....

Hmmmmm... A big NO, thanks..

thanks. Like someone with orthopedic shoes, I stand corrected.

No problem!

J-Cola is universally horrible, and slightly-more-citrus-flavor doesn't really help all that much.

Asahi does a decent craft cola that might also go well with your fried chicken. It’s no Fentiman’s Curiosity Cola, but it’s also not ¥400 a pop (or limited to import stores and Village Vanguard).
