Portable gas heater

Iwatani Co's portable gas heater uses a LP gas cartridge and is very useful in rooms where there is no electrical outlet or if a blackout occurs. When you light the heater, it becomes warm fast, emitting a radiant heat rather than a warm current. The heating angle is adjustable. One cartridge lasts 3 hours and 20 minutes.

Price: 15,750 yen. Cartridges are sold separately.

Very useful for ice fishing and camping and I think I am going to put this in my emergency earthquake kit.

It is overpriced, simple sentence.

It may be overpriced but it's still a lot cheaper than what TEPCO has been (over)charging me for electricity...

Hope anyone considering purchasing one of these appliances has adequate ventilation

Not sure but the gas could last longer if the heater is set at a moderately lower temperature and as someone did say, it could be usefull in an emergency situation. On the other hand, there are many good keresene heaters available like the one I saw at Costco for somewhat less.

It reminds of something designed in the 1960's.

My thoughts exactly. But if you get one, consider that the new ones often need electric power to work. Which was very frustrating during the week and half without power after the big earth quake. Fortunately we were later able to buy a pair of the old design after a couple of days, and they don't need any electricity

No danger of carbon monoxide (or other chemical contaminants)?

I am curious how much those cartridges cost. 3.5 hours is not a significant amount of time for an entire cartridge. This seems like an item for people with disposable income. Another common kerosene heater will run for 8-9+ hours on one refilling.

I am curious if the "radiant heat" described feels much different from other models. The design looks nice and discrete to me.

I'm just waiting for the legions of bloodless harpies in my office to start bringing these into work. In addition to having the heaters blazing at 28 degrees already and sitting there draped in blankets like they just got pulled out of the sea. Now we might as well start planting pineapples round my desk.

This wil be handy on the trains as they might turn off the heat in the winter.
