Rubin’s Kokeshi Friend: A combination of Japanese traditions and modern design

Kokeshi dolls are traditional Japanese wooden figures that originated in the Tohoku region almost 150 years ago. Crafted without arms or legs, they feature a trunk and head adorned with delicate painted designs. Initially, these dolls were made as toys for children but eventually evolved into a symbol of Japanese craftsmanship. Their minimalist beauty, with floral motifs and bold colors, has been said to inspire Nintendo's "Miis."

For an unforgettable souvenir from Japan, check out "Rubin’s Kokeshi Friend,” a contemporary take on this timeless tradition. Designed by graphic designer Taku Sato, this doll reflects the theme of "connection." When placed together, the dolls’ unique shapes interlock seamlessly, symbolizing unity and harmonious relationships. The dolls also take inspiration from the "Rubin Vase," which features two faces converging.

Crafted by skilled artisans from Aomori Prefecture, each Rubin’s Kokeshi is one-of-a-kind. Made from locally sourced silver maple, the dolls carry the natural warmth of wood and the meticulous care of handcrafting. Available in two colorways, they cost ¥6,000 on the Another Imperial Hotel website.
