Send fax without using paper

Electronics manufacturer Sharp will release a paperless fax machine to the Japanese market on Aug 20. Using a touch panel and a digital pen, users can send A4 size faxes.

The device comes with a number of other useful features, such as a color-coded light that tells users if they are about to receive a fax from a known party, or whether it may be junk mail.

Open pricing.

Paperless fax, isn't that an email?

Sounds like they use a Modem/Fax card from a PC.

Been using that function for years, send a fax from MSOffice(example) direct(just like printing).

And you can also receive faxes, store them on the disk or print them out.

Nice idea though as many faxes that arrive don't need to be kept and only waste paper when printed.

I though you can make this easily in the last 10 years with your PC.. Obvious not.

Seriously? A fax, who uses a fax let alone a land line phone?

Raises hand.

My PC is hooked up to my fiber-line and I do receive faxes and calls on the PC.

Don't have a traditional NTT line but I do need faxes for proofs and corrections.

My PC will answer the line and either receive the fax, ring the "phone" if I don't answer PC will take a voice-message.

Granted phone being IP means calls are free between other IP ones which most companies now use and saves me tons with overseas clients.

I do a lot of editing on galleys and the fax is still the most practical way to go.

"isn't that an e-mail?"

It is. But "paperless fax" sounds greener.

You can also send paperless faxes via Skype. I think you need a plug-in though.

What's a FAX? Is it like an e-mail?

Email. Get a copier with scanner ability. Why waste money on some pseudo fax? Primative gomi.

isn't that like a colour 2400 dpi scan that saves a file which you can then send as an email attachment? No? Then what is it?

This looks about a generation out-of-date. There are lots of services in Japan and elsewhere that will give you a local number where people can send you faxes. The faxes are then emailed to you as attachments, so you can look at them on screen or print them out. I used one for years but finally cancelled about 3 years ago after I hadn't received a single fax for 18 months. Multifunction printers with built-in scanners are so cheap these days, it's easier and cheaper just to scan and attach.

Pharmacies still rely on fax for filling prescriptions. The sending telephone numbers of the fax verify the authenticity of a script's origin.

I used my computer, too, to send faxes that didn't exist until I installed Vista. The fax application is not part of the operating system.
