Toy fan pumps out some serious wind power on the cheap

Since its release on April 28, people have been flocking to toy stores across Japan to get their hands on toymaker Takara Tomy’s Kuru Kuuuuru Fan (Round and Rooooouuund Fan), so much so that their original 60,000 units had to be upped to an additional shipment of 120,000 to meet the demand.

It seems since abandoning much of the nuclear power in Japan, people’s minds are set on alternative means of keeping cool while saving electric costs or during potential black outs. The reason everyone wants this particular toy fan is because of the sheer wind power it has. For every one turn of the hand, the fan blade spins 100 times.

Despite its looks, it’s a highly efficient fan whose simple construction of gears provides a highly concentrated gust of wind with no electricity needed. Because it was designed for kids, it’s made of lightweight material that’s both durable and gentle to avoid accidental injury if the blades hit your face.

Also since it’s a toy there’s a variety of styles to choose from featuring Pikachus and whatnot. Plus they come with a strap so you can rock your Sugar Bunnies fan around your neck 24/7.

For only 630 yen each, they’re a steal as long as you don’t mind the emasculating characters on them. As of this writing, only the Pikachu and Cars styles were not sold out from the company’s website, so get your hands on one while you can. It may be the best way to keep cool if your power grid suddenly goes down one hot afternoon.

Cool! Is this available online? I can't find it on Japan Trend website. Appreciate any help.

I can't really imagine that you can cool yourself while at the same time expending your energy trying to cool yourself... While you're cooling yourself manually with a fan, your body also heats up, and then the fan cools you down... so practically you haven't really cooled your body heat at all. I don't know, that's how I see it...

I'd love to get one! Wish they'd sell them outside of Japan! Perhaps we can get copy-cat ones from China? Haha...

Looks like something you might find in "Kiddyland".

Thomas-

if it's really 100 rotations per turn of the rotar, you'll probably be cooled off. Especially since the thing's made for kids and probab ly doesn't take a whole heck of a lot of energy to turn.

What you're saying is more true for sensu and uchi-wa, the hand-held paper traditional fans. There you move your arm vigorously in a 1-for-1 ratio of arm-movements to gusts-from-fan, and you heat up, sometimes. Depending on outside temp and the size an stiffness of your fan.

Don't think your body would heat up that much by turning that thing, doesnt look hard at all, 100 turns of the fan to one turn of the hand is pretty impressive. If they designed one in black, add a bit of metal to make it a bit classier for adults, then I wouldn't mind buying one... But these look cute

How many seconds does it take for the fan blades to spin 100 times? Maybe 10? Then you have to turn the handle again?

Serrano, I don't think it will take 10 seconds to turn the handle just once.
