Has it occurred to the author that the mainstream may in fact be the populists?

Reckon Marine Le Pen would have a chance vs anyone from the left. Very unlikely a socialist, green or communist will make it to the 2nd round though but we never know. If so, watch out.

In the likely event that either Juppe or Sarkozy make it to the 2nd round, MLP would most probably lose vs Juppe but not so sure vs Sarko. Many former commies have now switched to the FN so it's not impossible a few more will/would do the same. But right now Juppe has to be the overwhelming favourite to win the whole thing.

PS: Juppe is centre-right rather than 'centrist'.

The left went too far with immigration from Islamic countries who can't assimilate, political correctness and globalism. The push back isn't over yet.

It isn't "populism " which is a tsunami. Populism is what the elite socialists use to get power and it is the elite left wing socialist governments being rejected by their victims. Brexist, trump and hopefully more are simple the people removing from power the elite political class, and it's a good thing to do.

A tempered populism is just what the world needs. The globalists have been undermined by the George Soros open-borders crowd. Merkel's disregard for her own countries national interests by her extreme policy on refugees. Now half of Europe is worried that their societies could be turned inside out.

The way to counter the populist mob is to make voting compulsory. Voluntary voting ensures populist mob victories as they have a lot of free time on their hands and are more swept up by emotion to get out their numbers

We're just getting warmed up, beleive me ;) oh, yeah, a pointer: Shrieking "racist" doesn't actually work any more. A major politician just saying "yes, I am", then continuing with his speech, is less than 5 years away.

Wanting their own citizens to have jobs and wanting an end to open borders immigration in order to protect their society isn't racism - it is common sense. Why would any first world nation want to voluntarily become a third world nation?

Anyway you look at it, the world news is going to get very interesting for the next few years.
