I hope most folks recognize this for what it is - that China has and will continue to conduct it's foriegn policy with only it's interests in mind, no matter how dire the consequences may be for everyone else.

I mean, how ridiculous is it that China is cautioning restraint and so far failng to take any action against nK for the Cheonan incident - just imgaine if a Chinese warship had been sunk in waters close to Taiwan and all the evidence pointed to a Taiwan submarine - how "restrained" would the Chinese be then......

I'm certainly not advocating any military action, but it's time China put the real squeeze on nK - and cut off all aid and business - that's all it would take for the regime to back off these provacative actions and maybe even sitting down and really dealing on it's nukes.

@lincolnman: you can say that about any country especially the US. If you really think the US is not behaving this way, I am sorry but you are naive. I am not defending China but let's call it how it is.

This article, especially at the beginning, shows such naivety; saying that America is going to China to help solve its problems with NK thus giving it more 'international heft' - China is NK's only ally and its closest neighbour - doesn't it make crystal clear sense to get China to rein in its mad dog neighbour? Wouldn't doing it any other way make no sense at all? The US has basically no contact with NK - why would it? China essentially keeps NK alive and it's about time it leaned on those NK maniacs. And it's true, sadly, that China does nothing at all that isn't in its own interests - there's nothing new in that. And a quick reminder that it was the GW Bush administration that chose to invade helpless Iraq whilst NK was busy developing its nuclear weapons, which really doesn't help now that NK is starting to be truly unhinged in its actions.

The issue is how China assesses its interests. Does China really want instability on the Korean peninsula or in the Middle East?

OK let's condemn the attack. But why does the international community except South Korea have to take sanctions against North Korea? China's stance is appropriate: “Relevant parties should calmly and appropriately handle the issue and avoid escalation of the situation.”

Iraq has oil and a pitiful army, while NK has no oil and a formidable armed force.

Prominent among those interests is stability in the region.

A destabilize NK would be like if Mexico melted down. The current trickle of illegal migrants flowing to the US would become a downpour. China does not want that to happen to them - massive amounts of NK refugees crossing over.

The U.N.?? When it comes the enforcing treaties or approving and then taking justified military action they are more impotent than B. Obama is. Japan, take note, Obama will leave you in the lurch just the same. And guess who knows this best? Your Chinese buddies.

The UN CANNOT take military action as it has no Military of its own.

If the UN needs to take Military action a force can/will be assembled from member countries.

OTOH, looking at the current power/veto situation inside the UN do you really want them to have a Military of their own that can be controlled by a few countries.

This isn't 1950. If the UN determined that NKorea broke the Korean War Armistice Agreement and put forth a resolution to conduct another UN POLICE ACTION, which is what the Korean War actually was, I seriously doubt China would jeapordize what it has accomplished in it's relationships with the world as they did back then and go against the UN. The Russians for sure won't do it. North Korea just isn't worth it to anyone now.

“Relevant parties should calmly and appropriately handle the issue and avoid escalation of the situation.” I agree. If a war broke out, Kim and co will probably vanish from the face of the earth. Not before Seoul is engulfed in artillery fire and a million North Korean rejects cross into China and what if they considered using what limited nuclear capability they may process. The U.S and Japan can seek a harder stance on North Korea because they don't border North Korea.

Let's just hope Kim Jong gets IL and goes away forever.
