Here's my two cents: the leaders of today are generally composed of strong leaders and stronger personalities. In China, we have Xi Jinping, who is virtually unopposed (or so we think) and is committed to return China to its former glory. In the US, we have Trump, who runs the country like how he runs his businesses, uncompromising and demanding while also trying to make America Great Again. In Southeast Asia, we have Duterte, Widodo, Mahathir, Lee, etc. who stand by their ideals. In Japan, we have Abe who has hawkish tendencies. Despite the ocean of a pond Asia is, the growing number of big fish in it would make butting heads inevitable. And noticing the rising rivalry between China and the US, it is possible that a quasi-Cold War could happen, but instead focusing more on economic and political alignments. Hence, the conflict in Asia will not be fought by the military, but be fought by bank accounts - buying each other out as they compete
