It's been more than half a century. People and culture evolve over time. It's just weird to call the island any sort of republic of China. It's now simply Taiwan. Otherwise, it's like calling USA the Republic of England.

Exactly. Just because Americans speak English doesn't mean they are English. Taiwan (or Formosa) is its own political identity now and the 'People's Republic' of China will just have to put it in its pipe and smoke it. And the same goes concerning Hong Kong too!
