Back in the day, being woke meant being smart

It still does; except amongst the consumers of rhetoric by individuals like DeSantis who are asleep and not very smart.

4 ( +11 / -7 )

But for GOP lawmakers and conservative talk show pundits, such as DeSantis, “woke” is a pejorative word used to describe those who believe that systemic racism exists in America and remains at the heart of the nation’s racial shortcomings.

Ronald E Hall is a professor of Social Work, Michigan State University.

Sorry, I must disagree with the good "professor" on this one (by the way, I hope the two s doesn't show that this whole article was AI produced).

Those that would use labels? Do so for the express reason of framing the narrative of their supporters and opponents surrounding their worldviews.

If they could, they would make people wear stickers that say 'Us = Good' and "Them = Bad." They cannot. So some '__ism' labels need suffice for the time being. But, no, this doesn't need to happen.

Be it “woke” or “cultural literacy,” or “political correctness,” or any of the other classics, the purpose behind label making is to round up those opinions and views of 'them' for whom you do not agree with – or are getting in the way of your political views – put them all in a box, close the lid, put a label on it, and ignore it entirely as being extreme. Or worse: seek somehow to banish them from ever getting out of the box to be able to speak their views.

But it does a disservice to those who we teach in schools, everywhere, to use labels. Teaching those who must develop their own understanding of the world around them, while taking an active interest in - and a genuine concern for – how it should run. Forming attitudes and understandings that are necessary for participation in a constructive and meaningful life, WHILE acknowledging and appreciating what we do have in common: independence, patience, and tenacity to grow in wisdom, to meet situations, while learning to make wise choices.

Stated differently, the strengths of what we have in common can – and should – be built upon, and encouraged to grow. For the betterment of all.

Sorry, I have never agreed with any philosophy that insists that you need to tear down society in order to build it back up again. And such should be resisted, since I suspect that when you tear down the one aspect of society, the others will follow suit.

Please consider my comment, the first paragraph, to read as follows:

DeSantis might want to be careful. Set the fascist hounds loose and they may attack their handlers in the end. I'm quite sure Ernst Röhm, head of the SA, thought himself safe. DeSantis may be wishing for a country in which he may not be quite white enough.

If Mr. Desantis were to go back 130 years in US history he would find there were learned articles by supposedly highly educated scientists who, based on measurements of forehead size and slope, skull volume and other characteristics were claiming to "prove" that southern Europeans like Mr. Desantis Italian ancestors, and particularly Italians, were intellectually and physically inferior to white Anglo-Saxons. They were widely distrusted because they drank wine and were Catholic. They were seen as being more loyal to Rome than to the US. One of the largest mass lynchings in US history was in New Orleans in 1891 when eleven Italians were either shot or hung. There were other lynchings of Italians. Distrust of Italians became so great that in the early 1921 immigration from Southern Europe was restricted by an act of Congress. To quote a line from the article I am going to link, " One popular book published in 1907 stated baldly that “immigrants from eastern and southern Europe are storming the Nordic ramparts of the United States and mongrelizing the good old American stock.""

Sound familiar? Replacement theory only applied to Italian and to a lesser degree Greek immigrants. WOPs they were called, WOP for WithOut Papers. Oh the horror.

Desantis is a clown whose only value or contributions are purely comedic.

Ronald E Hall is a professor of Social Work, Michigan State University.

A lot to unpack in this bio.

In any case, this "Professor of Social Work"! (can you imagine the value in THAT degree) is a hopeless relic of a monolithic and broken education system (university faculties in jokes like social work usually identify as left/socialist in 97 to 99% range)

In fact, Ron Desantis is a wildly popular Governor in a state that people are flocking to in droves from Democrat disasters like California and Oregon.

The reason they attack him so hatefully is simple.

Had it not been for Florida opening up from the draconian and disastrous lockdowns in September, 2020, the rest of the US - and therefore the rest of the world - might still be locked down in some capacity today.

Desantis, more than anyone, denied these sociopaths their revolution.

yet today it is a pointed insult and taken as one.

The "woke" are a risible lot who see fascism, racism, sexism, fat phobia, this ism, that ism, in everything possible.

They wore out their welcome very, very quickly when ordinary people saw through the charade and realized these boors were nothing but sociopaths who enjoyed bullying people.

Woke = narcissistic sociopaths pretending to be compassionate

It still does;

Disney and Anheuser Busch would vehemently disagree.

except amongst the consumers of rhetoric by individuals like DeSantis who are asleep and not very Smart.

Not according to constituents in Florida.

Comedic? Hmm…..

-5 ( +6 / -11 )

I find extremely entertaining how people try "woke" as a criticism to modern versions of popular culture works that originally ("back in the day") were recognized precisely because of this. Saying that things like Star Trek or X-men are becoming woke, is like saying water is becoming wet.

You forgot the sense entitlement and victim hood as a currency. The racism of low expectations!

It's been fascinating to see the rise and fall of the term in the culture wars. It's a great example of how the left and the activist class never know how to draw the line and will keep pushing and pushing until what they seek becomes absurd, to everyone.

I like how woke folk now claim that the term is devoid of meaning and a hallucination of the far right! Had an American mate openly state to me he was woke (as a badge of honor during the chaos of the early BLM movement. He was trying to force people to pledge alligience to his cause and black out their profile pics on Facebook). He has since distanced himself from the term and reckons that woke has no meaning and never really existed. The mental gymnastics and word play of the left never ceases to amaze! I guess we need the extremes on both sides to show us where not to venture!

Saying that things like Star Trek or X-men are becoming woke, is like saying water is becoming wet.

Hard to argue with the gravitas of this post...

-8 ( +4 / -12 )

The woke have been indoctrinated to want to change the world, but they can't even clean their own room.

Comedic? Hmm…..

Yes, comedic. Signing bills means nothing. The bills he signed are meaningless because they had no power and accomplished nothing.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

The only thing more triggered and hysterical than the woke is those told to get outraged about it.

A fire in a pet shop.

6 ( +10 / -4 )

Yes, comedic. Signing bills means nothing.

Does it now?

The bills he signed are meaningless because they had no power and accomplished nothing.

Ok, so you’re saying his overall documented accomplishments mean nothing to you. I guess so….I mean, you don’t live there, makes sense you feel like that.

Thank God most that live in Florida don’t think so.

https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/favorability/ron-desantis/

The only thing more triggered and hysterical than the woke is those told to get outraged about it.

The people that are outraged about woke don’t need anyone telling them anything, and they can see it for themselves

-3 ( +5 / -8 )

Ok, so you’re saying his overall documented accomplishments mean nothing to you. I guess so….I mean, you don’t live there, makes sense you feel like that.

What documented accomplishments? Don’t say gay and punish Twitter? How did those work out?

You don’t need to live in a place to understand something about it. If you feel otherwise you can talking about Gaza and Ukraine.

The people that are outraged about woke don’t need anyone telling them anything, and they can see it for themselves

The people who are ‘outraged about woke’ apparently can’t even define what ‘woke’ is, have a hard time seeing anything for themselves and rely on screeching bobble heads to tell them what to think.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

As he promised in Iowa in December 2023 during his failed presidential campaign, “We will fight the woke in education, we will fight the woke in the corporations, we will fight the woke in the halls of Congress. We will never, ever surrender to the woke mob.”

The whole anti-woke shillery is cover for the usual corporate welfare socialism for the rich scam, in Ron's Florida more than in most places. They get double the MAGA.

It is shocking how Republicans have glorified ignorance. Especially since so many of their politicians are actually highly educated, no matter how much they pretend not to be.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

There is nothing more infuriating than standing in front of people, puffing out your big girls blouse, stamping your little feet, and vomiting out sanctimonious pious pulpit priggery.

Call it what you politically prefer, virtue signalling wokery, however it will guarantee your insincere cretinism stupidity.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

There is nothing more infuriating than standing in front of people, puffing out your big girls blouse, stamping your little feet, and vomiting out sanctimonious pious pulpit priggery.

This is literally all that happens at a 45 rally. Some folks like foot stamping and sanctimonious pulpit priggery. Especially with cute liddle red hats.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Does it never occur to sit down to take a breath to wonder what "woke" in its vernacular English purist form actually means?

Beyond the believed heads up to "racial prejudice and discrimination"?

I doubt it.

Because why is this article even focusing on Florida Gov Ron DeSantis?

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Bob you are going to have to educate/help out me on a 45 rally.........

I have learnt the hard way to take a step back and not politically stamp my little feet.

It takes time to convince, if ever, but seconds to sell a political lemon.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

What documented accomplishments?

The ones you so convenient illegal glossed over.

You don’t need to live in a place to understand something about it.

Yeah, you do, that’s like someone trying to teach me and or want to opine about the bass guitar and they can’t play a lick…

The people who are ‘outraged about woke’ apparently can’t even define what ‘woke’ is,

We can, Disney found out, not to mention, we all have access to Google and the dictionary, not just liberals.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

Rightists aren't very good at things like humour, wit or insults.

They think 'Social Justice Warrior' is a pejorative term. Presumably they favour social injustice and being not awake. And criminality, they love criminality.

Weird bunch, but their time of being relevant is coming to an end as we just スルー them towards a better future.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

The people who are ‘outraged about woke’ apparently can’t even define what ‘woke’ is, have a hard time seeing anything for themselves and rely on screeching bobble heads to tell them what to think

They pretty much use all the same memes and catchphrases learned from grifters and genuine idiots on podcasts.

So in lockstep.

I heard one in testing view that the leaders of the left and right love this hysteria. It diverts attention away from their failures and lack of ideas to solve much more serious and chronic problems.

Another interesting view is if a once serious journalist starts weighing in on either side, he or she is after cheap clicks. I used to read Douglas Murray for a bit of balance from the right. I disagreed with him on most issues but he’s a sharp man. He’s been guilty of cashing in on this hysteria.

Suppose it pays the bills.

Rightists aren't very good at things like humour, wit or insults.

We are, see the ratings of Greg Gutfeld lately, we have a great sense of humor, that is why we tend to mock the left….I mean, seriously….lol

They think 'Social Justice Warrior' is a pejorative term. Presumably they favour social injustice and being not awake. And criminality, they love criminality.

If that were true, then most conservatives would live in blue states, and allow themselves to be swept over with criminality, that’s the reason why we all left to get away from all that crime.

Weird bunch, but their time of being relevant is coming to an end

No, it’s just beginning.

If you lived someplace remote and had a child with a disability that forced you to rely on the hard work of social workers to find the necessary medical care and behavioral health services your child desperately needs to stay in school you would not make such a ridiculously uninformed statement.

The autocratic current governor of Florida should use his leadership to fix deep problems the state has been subjected to during his two terms in office. One of them is them being the insurance crisis.

Instead, he has been busy wasting taxpayer money in transporting Israelis to Florida and Venezuelans from the Texas border to cities in northern states, as well as sending military and law enforcement forces to Texas.

As the consummate politician that he is, he has subjected Florida residents to fascist policies.

We the People of Florida deserve better.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

If that were true, then most conservatives would live in blue states, and allow themselves to be swept over with criminality, that’s the reason why we all left to get away from all that crime.

The unintended irony in that statement is that the most liberal states have the lowest rates of death by firearm while the highest rates occur in resolutely Republican controlled states.

Woke, wokery, Wokoholic,

25 Woke Examples: What Counts As Woke?*

By Chris Drew (PhD) / June 30, 2023.

This fell in my inbox a few days ago....

I don't think I have come across a word so maligned/misaligned after being given the social media mangling, political establishment misrepresentation distortion outside of Florida Gov Ron DeSantis almost seeing mobs of zombie wokery in his sleep.

After reading this article I seriously believe there will be US asylums full, devoted to the subject, with its subjects in straight jackets insisting its all a conspiracy.

Religion, Jimizo?

It will be the death of us all, assuming Putin/Xi Jinping doesn't poison us all before radical Islam blows us all to kingdom come.

Being woke used to mean being smart.

Today, being smart is seen as a threat by Conservatives the world over. It is so much easier to control the less than smart.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

bob I think you may have missed the point.

Or take Ron a tad to seriously.

My first post in this thread is very clear how I feel about ron.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Don't say gay

I still remember the laughter watching all these tinfoil hat lunatics livestreaming themselves driving down the streets of Miami Beach yelling "GAAAY!!" at the top of their lungs drawing blank stares from pedestrians.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

Another interesting view is if a once serious journalist starts weighing in on either side, he or she is after cheap clicks. I used to read Douglas Murray for a bit of balance from the right. I disagreed with him on most issues but he’s a sharp man. He’s been guilty of cashing in on this hysteria.

Imagine the feelings of loneliness, bitterness and emptiness in the leftist/socialist camp who have seen their entire belief system laying in ruins before them.

They know they were not just wrong, but tragically wrong and naive. But they have demonized the group of people they agree with the most now.

What can they do? The most honest and principled will admit mistakes and move on for the betterment of themselves, their families and their communities.

The others who don't have that backbone and integrity?

They lash out in ALL directions. They hate the left, the right, the center - and everything in between.

That is their life now.

Just hatred.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

The left gets so triggered and hysterical at being labeled woke that they then engage in violent demonstrations and "protests".

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

Yes, but remember, with the white vote, the first black American President would have never happened, that goes to show you that the nation is not inherently racist overall.

So true. And the black voter support for Trump is even higher than in the last election.

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

What can they do? The most honest and principled

Honesty and sincerity are indeed important. The voices of the honest and principled are worth something. They are worth taking into consideration.

The others who don't have that backbone and integrity?

You mean the dishonest? You need honesty to have integrity. Without that, you are worthless and undeserving of respect.

The left gets so triggered and hysterical at being labeled woke that they then engage in violent demonstrations and "protests".

50/1 on that being true.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Honesty and sincerity are indeed important. The voices of the honest and principled are worth something. They are worth taking into consideration.

Then why promote far left conspiracy theorists about Israel bombing Al-Ahli hospital in Gaza when it is proven Islamic Jihad fired a rocket at it?

Utterly hysterical.

150/1 we don't get a cogent response.

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

Then why promote far left conspiracy theorists about Israel bombing Al-Ahli hospital in Gaza when it is proven Islamic Jihad fired a rocket at it?

I didn’t. The preposterously dishonest and ridiculous person who went under the handle ‘painkiller’ kept saying this.

I asked for confirmation of the source.

I don’t know where the dreadful excuse for a person who kept saying this went.

I think he/she got banned.
