It's so nice to read Japan Today's articles on Brexit. This is the second one in a row that doesn't use the word "warn" once. Most British press reports can't get past the first paragraph without someone warning of impending disaster. They've left me "warn out" (worn out).

A former Economist writer pledging compassion for Terry, the begging goes on...

The EU may hold the high cards, but it does not have to play them all to demonstrate just how painful it can make Brexit.

It will be a 'Royal Flush' anyway :)

Britain needs to secure an FTA and open borders agreement with Canada, Australia and New Zealand. (CANZUK)

If it does that it won't matter what the EU does. The UK will be secure.

As a result, the negotiations that Brexiters thought would be such a doddle have proved to be a series of harsh lessons.

That was their biggest mistake. It's never easy, and in fact often impossible (and rightly so), to negotiate a severance package and/or good settlement agreement once you've resigned. Negotiating a possible exit strategy (before/without a referendum) would have been imo a much better option.

Brexiteers should never forget that THEY decided to leave and as such an 'amicable parting of the ways' was never an option.

The best way to achieve such a constructive partnership is for the EU to compromise now rather than sticking to an unrelenting stance.

Imo the EU won't stop playing hardball, they don't have to.

Exactly. The EU has nothing to gain by being flexible. The idea that you can opt out and leave smoothly with a decent deal will appeal to many voters across Europe.

All the countries mentioned as potential UK trade partners UK have already a trade agreement or one in process with the EU.

The UK may hope for Donny after Terry is gone...

Based on which knowledge? :)

Just simple common sense. Being a member of the EU has pros and cons. If you can opt out and still keep access to the pros, only an idiot would stay in suffering the cons.

I think that is as obvious as it gets.

Or a colony that has not yet the military and diplomatic power to revolt... My impression is many in UK are nostalgic of the times when colonies were at their service and they never accepted any other kind of deal where England would not dominate and exploit the others. It's not only May's clique. The airheads bought the Brexit dream project without knowing what that entails. Last year, I heard itw of farmers that would lose all their seasonal workers as soon as EU citizens no longer get work permits. The journalist pointed that issue : "From 2019, you will have no more workers from East Europe, do you have a plan to do without them ? -Oh, we'll get cheaper ones from poor countries, they will work for pennies. Before the war, we had that, not arrogants Europeans that demand the same salary as Brits...". They really believed they'd get slaves ? The surprise is that even before Brexit deadline, the workers ceased coming. The farmers have lost most of their produce last Summer. Someone tell them it's 21st Century.

So what? And we are not talking about a simple trade deal. We are talking about creating a bloc with open borders and an FTA with a possible 1 currency and a customs union. That's very different from a simple trade agreement.

It's not sinking in: your kitchen table dream about some customs union with 1 currency [ ! ] is going to bite existing trade deals.

So who do you think that Canada , Australia and NZ would prefer to deal with? :)

Like which deals? How and why would it do that?

The EU is showing it’s ugly, intransigent side!

Where are the so-called European values that are so often touted?

How farcical it is.

The U.K. will be just fine without the EU’s arrogant and dictatorial manner!
