Conservatives lost more than an election

By Chuck Baldwin

That Barack Obama trounced John McCain last Tuesday should have surprised no one. The real story, however, is not how Obama defeated McCain. The real story is how McCain defeated America's conservatives. For all intents and purposes, conservatism -- as a national movement -- is completely and thoroughly dead. Obama did not destroy it, however. It was George W Bush and McCain who destroyed conservatism in America.

Soon after Bush was elected, it quickly became obvious he was no conservative. On the contrary, Bush has forever established himself as a big-government, warmongering, internationalist neocon. Making matters worse was the way Bush presented himself as a conservative Christian. In fact, Bush's portrayal of himself as a conservative Christian paved the way for the betrayal and ultimate destruction of conservatism. And the greatest tragedy of this deception is the way that Christian conservatives so thoroughly (and stupidly) swallowed the whole Bush/McCain neocon agenda.

For example, Bush and his fellow neocons like to categorize and promote themselves as being "pro-life," but they have no hesitation or reservation about killing hundreds of thousands of innocent people in reckless and unconstitutional foreign wars. By the same token, how many unborn babies were saved by six years of all three branches of the federal government being under the control of these "pro-life" neocons? Not one! Ask the more than eight million unborn babies who were killed in their mothers' wombs during the last eight years how "pro-life" Bush and McCain are.

As a result of this insanely inconsistent and pixilated punditry, millions of Americans now laugh at the very notion of "pro-life" conservatism. Bush and McCain have made a mockery of the very term.

Consider, too, the way Bush and McCain have allowed the international bankers on Wall Street to bilk America's taxpayers out of trillions of dollars. Yes, I know Obama also supported the Wall Street bailout, but it was the Republican Party that controlled the White House for the last eight years and the entire federal government for six out of the last eight years. In fact, the GOP has won seven out of the previous 10 presidential elections. They have controlled Supreme Court appointments for the past 30-plus years. They have appointed the majority of Treasury secretaries and Federal Reserve chairmen. They have presided over the greatest trade imbalances, the biggest deficits, the biggest spending increases, and now the worst financial disaster since the Great Depression.

Again, the American people look at these so-called "conservatives" and laugh. No wonder such a sizeable majority of voters yawned when McCain tried to scare them by accusing Obama of being a "big taxer." How can one possibly scare people with a charge like that after the GOP has made a total mockery of fiscal conservatism? That's like trying to scare someone coming out from a swim in the Gulf of Mexico with a squirt gun.

Then there was the pathetic attempt by the National Rifle Association (NRA) to scare gun owners regarding an Obama White House. Remember that McCain is the same guy that the NRA rightly condemned for proposing his blatantly unconstitutional McCain/Feingold bill. McCain is also the same guy that tried to close down gun shows. He even made a personal campaign appearance for a pro-gun control liberal in the State of Oregon a few short years ago. In fact, the Gun Owners of America (GOA) gave McCain a grade of "F" for his dismal record on Second Amendment issues. Once again, Chicken Little-style paranoia over Obama rang hollow when the alternative was someone as liberal as McCain.

But the worst calamity of this election was the way conservatives -- especially Christian conservatives -- surrendered their principles for the sake of political partisanship. Across the country, rather than stand on principle, hundreds of thousands of pastors, Christians, and pro-life conservatives capitulated and groveled before McCain's neocon agenda.

In doing so, they forfeited any claim to truth, and they abandoned any and all fidelity to constitutional government. They should rip the stories of Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego out of their Bibles. They should never again tell their children, parishioners, and radio audiences the importance of standing for truth and principle. They have made a mockery of Christian virtue. No wonder a majority of the voting electorate laughs at us Christians. No wonder the GOP crashed and burned last Tuesday.

Again, it wasn't Obama who destroyed conservatism; it was Bush, McCain, and the millions of evangelical Christians who supported them. And until conservatives find their backbone and their convictions, they deserve to remain a burnt-out, has-been political force. They have no one to blame but themselves.

And since it is unlikely that the Republican Party has enough sense to understand any of this and will, therefore, do little to reestablish genuine conservative principles, it is probably best to just go ahead and bury the scoundrels now and move on to something else. Without a sincere commitment to constitutional government, the GOP has no justifiable reason to ever govern again. Therefore, put a fork in them. They are done. Let a new entity arise from the ashes: one that will stand for something more than just "the lesser of two evils." As we say in the South, That dog just won't hunt anymore.

Unfortunately, while Conservatives lost more than an election - radical evangelicals came close to winning one. When Bush ran – he ran as a conservative, when McCain ran he was pulled along by Palin. Scary stuff there.

Conservatives need to regroup under conservatism and cast aside their evangelical backers – and just maybe they can win again.

"Conservatives lost more than an election"

And you could say that when people as racist and treasonous as Jeremiah Wright and Bill Ayers are find themselves, their twisted messages and radical agendas protected and even defended by the mainstream media the Left won more than just an election.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Based on what you wrote here, I'm making the assumption that you are definitely not conservative. It doesn't take long to figure out that there really is a bias in the news media.

My perception that complaints of liberal bias are overblown means I'm not a conservative?

Define "conservative." I fail to see how perception of the media plays into a conservative ideology one way or the other. You think there's an "obvious" bias, I think it's ridiculously overstated, and used as a distraction. So...now I can't believe in small government? Care to explain that one?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I don't really care what you think anyway.

Of course you don't, sweetheart! That's why you post to me, yeah? Bwahahahahahahahahaha! xD

PS: Ask anyone in your military family; they'll be quick to tell you that you have no idea what's it's like to you actually sign up.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

You're obviously not a member of the US military. Please don't try to act like you are.

Nope, I'm not a member of the Military. Oddly enough though, I am from a Military family. Yes that means most of my family is now, or has served in the Military. I think that gives me sufficient grounds to speak from. And while 85% might be high, I've only ever actually met 1 person in the military who didn't consider themselves conservative. Met hundreds who do. Maybe I'm biased, maybe I've just been fortunate in my friends, and in who my family brought home. But there ya go. Take it as you will. I don't really care what you think anyway.

Something to consider in this whole thing, is the regional aspects of this election. The vast majority of the states were close, some for Obama, some for McCain. However there were several states that were in no way close, and contribute disproportionally to the margins. Specifically, states like California, New York, and obviously Illinois. These 3 are very large states, and taken together add roughly 6 million votes to Obamas margin of victory. Without those margins, Obama would have still won, but it would not nearly have been by as much.

The point I'm making here, is that Obama is not nearly as universally loved as some people are making him out to be. This election really was close, except in some disproportionately liberal states. This suggests that the majority of America is divided over him, and certainly, that he didn't win by a landslide.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Sarge,

53 percent Obama to 46 percent are the final numbers. And the electoral college numbers are over 2 to 1 for Obama, and that as we know from 2000 is how presidents get elected.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Let them stew in their losing slop, while we work to establish a permanent progressive majority in American....

Yes we can!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Quite right, Christian cons have contributed greatly to the dumbing down of the US.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

No, it is also the Christian conservative that is on the way out. Stop trying to find a scapegoat and point to all the other stupid things the Republicans/Christian conservative/Bush did and say it wasn't us. Your just as guilty.

Baldwin is not a good writer. And on top his not been a good writer he is not a particularly good thinker. In fact he is clueless. The only thing interesting about him is that he belongs to a fringe of the American right-wing. He opposes the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq but he is an Isalmophobe. He opposes the Patriot Act but also opposed a woman's right to choose abortion. He is a pro-gun nut who favors private militas. He is also a fundamentalist Bible-beater who hates Martin Luther King for theological reason and because King had a better sex life than he has. He was a member of Moral Majority. He supports profiling. He is the sort of right-wing "libertarian" who in the end would be as totalitarian as Bush if he had the power.

But he doesn't. He is an eccentric with a small following. He is probably not that well funded. Not as well as the neocons.

Anyway, this last election was won not over ideology but mostly over the economy. Not even over Iraq. People's stomachs spoke. The Republicans were seen as the chief instigators of the mess by a critical mass of voters. If the economic crisis hadn't hit McCain just might have won. And, yeah, the US might have bombed, bombed, bombed Iran.

No one in power is as pure as Chuck. If they were they wouldn't be in power.

Conservatives lost

'Nuff said, other than Thank God!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"Barack Obama trounced John McCain"

52% to 46% - a real trouncing!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Conservatives lost a battle, mainly because they didn't nominate a conservative for president and because they are unfairly perceived as causing the financial crisis.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

this election was a lose - lose situation, anytime your only choice is between senators there is no "win" possible.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

OTR thankfully yr type are in the minority, wud be a scary world otherwise & yr bud GWB almost got you to that scary place, hopefully now the US will turn from the road to ruin

I just googled this Chuck Baldwin guy. I was wondering what was up, the article wasn't written too well, he couldn't seem to make up his mind about being a conservative, liberal, or if he was just a crackpot. What I did find out is that he ran as a presidential candidate on the constitution party ticket. He is also a pastor for the Crossroads Baptist Church in Pensacola, FL. Why is someone so far from the mainstream of the USA even given more than a footnote on this site? It is not that I don't agree with a lot of his criticism, I like the way he bashes the Bush Administration, but this guy doesn't really represent a majority of any sort of the thinking public.

goodDonkey - Har!

It must be from the Molenir Research Center; it certainly isn't fact.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

What with 85% of military people, and their families being conservative

Is that statistic from the Molenir Research Center?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

What with 85% of military people, and their families being conservative.

You're obviously not a member of the US military. Please don't try to act like you are.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Only in America - so much for so little.

Conservatives vs Liberals - the broken record just plays on and on.

And on the record - you don't just get it do you. The cons lost. The majority of voters said NO. That's what makes a DEMOCRACY great. People have a voice. Who knows, 4 or 8 years on maybe the people will see a neccessity for change again. But until then, get over it, get on with living a fruitful life with all citizens of all political persuasions.

After the Carnage of Bush's rule(check the stats), Obama could do little worse and will probably do so much better for the majority. He will not bring about the end of America as we know, which cannot be said for the Cons.

the church goers, the charitable , the patriotic and the good

I especially liked the charitable bit after reading your posts. doesnt seem a little contradictary?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I find it amusing that you are so strongly for Obama, despite being in the military. How does it feel being in such a small minority. What with 85% of military people, and their families being conservative. Mostly because libs like Obama, all want to cut the military to nothing.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Not gonna lose my job, OTR. I've survived the cuts, I'll last till retirement, and I'll know that those I've mentored to take my place will enjoy a full military career just like I did.

It's revealing that you seem to be rooting for the opposite, just so you can pin the "blame" on President Obama. Doesn't sound like anything a patriot would do.

Anyway, I have to go now; I'm on duty in a couple of hours.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Hey coooooool, New York Times!!! Wow , how fair and balanced.

Conservatives are still strong. As i already stated earlier, this election was stolen by the Liberal media and their paymasters.

USAFDude; I pity you i really do, when you are looking for a new job, think about the man who lost yours. That's right you get it now, don't you. IT WAS Obama!!!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Here's some more you don't know, cartoon boy. Enjoy!

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/03/washington/03military.html?hp

0 ( +0 / -0 )

USAFDude- My facts are readily available on the web, on news sites etc. If i spent all my time on the net watching cartoons like some here, i wouldn't know either. Bwahahahaha.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Prove your "facts", OTR. I base my statements on experience on the ground.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Conservatism isn't dead, because you can't out-vote God. Despite what the Democrat's tell you.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Mr Bush increased militray funding year on year, FACT!!!

We have the best equipped and cared for troops worldwide, FACT!!!

Obama will slash military spending and cut thousands of jobs, maybe yours, be ready for welfare curtesy of the Messiah.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Then do you care to explain the drawdown that's occurring in the US military as we "speak", a drawdown initiated by the bush administration?

Where's the conservative protection? Where's the equipment we badly need? Remember Rummy's statement about fighting with the military you have, not the military you want?

And finally, where's your beloved Fox News' coverage of the drawdown, since you seem to think Fox is so unbiased?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

USAFDude- Fox news has reported already taht Obama intends to reduce the size of the military and reduced military spending by GDP.

Conservatives would protect our military, giving them the equipment they need. You USAFDude, yes you are the loser, soon you are either unemployed or using badly maintained equipment due to poor funding.

Obama sound so great now buddy???

0 ( +0 / -0 )

OnTheRecord -

Obama is going to drastically cut military spending to fund his social programs. You may be lining up soon to pick up your welfare check, did you think about that?

Nope, I never waste time considering things that have no chance of happening.

All I "get" reading your posts is sour grapes.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The author, Chuck Baldwin, was the candidate for President from the Constitution Party this cycle. The Constitution Party (formerly the US Taxpayers' Party) is somewhat similar to the Libertarian Party ideologically, but is more protectionist economically and more socially conservative. Like the Ron Paul movement, but with a lot more Jesus.

I figure most people haven't heard of him, since he only got about 100,000 votes nationwide.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

USAFDude- You are so wrong buddy. Obama is going to drastically cut military spending to fund his social programs. You may be lining up soon to pick up your welfare check, did you think about that?

Conservatives are strong, we lost nothing, but the country gain a president who is an irresponsible fool. He's gonn ause our hard earned money like a kid in a candy store.

He also does not support our military, he is an appeaser, get it NOW??

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Obama, and any other President, will give your tax dollars to the US military. You see, the President see us as patriots regardless of how we voted. This means you're paying my salary even though I voted for Obama. Thank you. Now get back to work.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

BlackFlag- your liberal agenda is very disturbing for us moral folk. Conservatives beleive in self responsibility. Obama will give the idle OUR hard earned taxes.

We care, but we care for those deserving, not wallowing in self inflicted poverty.

We shall overcome.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

ok then, you conservatives bunker down and look after yourselves, leave the well being of America to the liberals and less selfish folk

0 ( +0 / -0 )

also, why is liberal a dirty word? why wouldnt you want to aid your fellow man? those you call the lazy and ill educated..... maybe the last 8 years helped put them in that position. stop worrying about your nest egg and tax deductibles and worry about your fellow americans who cant afford college or healthcare. call yourself a churchgoer and patriot? then do the christian and patriotic thing if you know the true meaning of the words

0 ( +0 / -0 )

BlackFlag- Wait and see how us good people the Conservatives will now fund the lazy and the ignorant.

Supplying free money and medicine to drug addicts and their ilk will cost us dear.

We are evolving from decency to evil, god help us!!!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

rigged election.

hahahahaha, no it's called progress. evolution of the spirit if you will. dont panic, evolution isnt a dirty word, cast Darwin from your mind for a moment. look to the future!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

give it a rest eh. you just used the words that should start alarm bells ringing...church goers, patriotic...danger danger

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The country lost because we the Conservatives lost this rigged election.

We, the church goers, the charitable , the patriotic and the good are the losers to the liberal elite.

Obama is going to give large welfare checks to the lazy and ill educated, what a disgrace.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

55% european descendant americans voted for Mccain and 96% afrikan americans voted for Obama. I'd say there are still too many backward minded racist people in america. But the current election result is undeniably a breakthrough.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Many Americans have a real rabid fear of the left. Does any other country take it to such extremes? If a person can provide good government (ok, we hope Barack will), what is wrong with that?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

During Bush's terms, the right BECAME what the left was during Reagan's term: blaming everything on the all powerful media, painting themselves as common people fighting for what was right while ignoring their representatives tendencies towards corruption, and generally bed wetting in self pity and fear every time one of their buttons get pushed. I'll say it again: those have become right wing talking points f, but when I was in college, they were VERY much of the left. Not only were they of the left, they DEFINED the left in their opponents' eyes. And the current crop of right wingers are too clueless, too arrogant, too quick to shift the focus on some other (left wing) thing, to understand the irony.

Based on what you wrote here, I'm making the assumption that you are definitely not conservative. It doesn't take long to figure out that there really is a bias in the news media. When a Republican says something questionable, its shouted from the rooftops, it receives wall to wall coverage (ala. Trent Lott) Yet if a black Democrat says it, if you're lucky, it will get a brief mention, otherwise its entirely covered up. It certainly doesn't get the coverage that the same statement would coming from a Republican.

Now you can call that whining, myself, I call if facing reality. Theres nothing conservatives can do against the media. You just have to factor it into your calculations that the media bias will have its effect, and hopefully you'll be able to get your message out anyway.

While I similarly disagree with the blanket statement of corruption charges against Republicans, I will agree that many of them forgot why it was people voted for them in the first place. It certainly wasn't so they could try to outspend the Democrats, or to pretend that they're the "common" people. By doing these things, you're right, they became essentially Democrats. They abandoned conservatism in favor of Big Government.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Nah, we love the U.S. too much to leave to the likes of Barack Obama. We'll stay and fight for what's right for America.

Cute slogan, Sarge. Got anything of substance? Like, say, something longer than a bumper sticker?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Here in the good ole US of A, Republicans tend to blame EVERYTHING BAD on Bill's loose zipper ( yes, even Katrina ). That is why they lost all credibility .

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The war had over $700 billion direct cost and over $1 trillion indirect cost. And this consequences total political disasters that the sole composer or the party behind mentioned political figures has paid dearly this week by losing numbers of seats on both houses plus the potus. It is the clear showing of how so many backward minded people run republican party and their tendency is largely existing in 1950's while world is stepping into 21st century situations.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

America has so many loose nuts on it's wheels that avoiding a catastrophe of monumental proportions is the challenge of the century.

Tens of millions poor or in poverty, Tens of millions jobless or in dire working straits, Tens of millions in poor health with no coverage, Tens of thousands of once good companies dead or dying, Tens of hundreds of soldiers dying for what amounts to a lie.......etc...etc. The republican party, it's cronies, it's connections, it's deceit have rippped the sensibilty of Americans.

Anyone who in all seriousness who doesn't believe that a new invigorating approach to solving the debacle masquerading as usa is required, just has lost the plot.

Obama deserves to be listened to and he and his team need to be given the space to begin his reforms. The people have given him this right. It is his.

The conservatives have failed.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

superesonator: "If you don't like the US, leave"

Nah, we love the U.S. too much to leave to the likes of Barack Obama. We'll stay and fight for what's right for America.

Leave it to TPOJ to put a damper on a positive statement.

Sarge, it's the truth, and it's not my job to be a cheerleader. You were trying to spin a statement from the article that had a valid point (that you misinterpreted, by the way...they were saying that the current GOP is done, not that the right is done in general.) This isn't a pep rally. You don't fix problems by putting a smiley face on them, and you are not entitled to good vibes because your wonderful opinions are such a treasure.

If you are truly a conservative, why would you praise Obama, who will be the most liberal president in our history?

Did I praise his policy? His ideology? His liberal tendencies? I praised him for not stooping to the level his opponents did. Are you suggesting his ideology means it's irresponsible to praise him for praiseworthy things he's done?

Obama acts his age? If he was acting his age, he'd do something to help his poor half-brother and his poor aunt.

First off, that's an awfully liberal thing to say. Second, didn't his aunt refuse help? And third, what the Hell does that have to do with "acting his age?"

And...hey, you're whining about the left again! I do believe I covered this already:

It's been a tactic to respond to criticisms of the right with a criticism of the left, a logical fallacy so blatant that it's use alone would have been enough to make me lose faith in the intelligence of the right (and don't whine to me about losing faith in the intelligence of the left...I lost that decades ago.)

I know JT frowns on personal posts, but Sarge, I think you personally embody what this article is rightfully decrying. The right, as it stands now, has been defined by partisan politics, obfuscation, and bare assertions. Obama, for his many flaws, ideological and otherwise, has not engaged in this behavior. Your insistence in refocusing on Obama in a article and thread dedicated to examining the flaws of the right is a perfect example of why America doesn't trust us anymore.

Stop saying "hey! Over there!" and deal with YOUR problems, OK?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"( sigh ) Leave it to TPOJ to put a damper on a positive statement."

Yes, it is indeed a positive statement that the faction that has destroyed the economy and our respect around the world has steadily lost it's brainwashed base of support.

Those who can not face the fact that the US has done something bold and commendable here will no doubt continue to post unpatriotic comments about our newly elected Commander in Chief.

But he has been chosen, and as this article states, the Conservatives have lost more than the election. They have lost all leverage in their strategy of intimidating the citizens of the United States, foreign states and international agencies.

And they have lost the ability to shout down the voices of reason. Now the voice of the majority can finally say to the few rabid supporters of a failed administration, "If you don't like the US, leave. :-D"

And it's about time, too.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Nice hit job article. This is drive by Journalism at its best.. It would be nice if truth wasn't lost in your clowd of derrangement and hate on Bush ............and.......... McCain. (They are not the same by any measure and were most notably rivals)

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@Molenir

Though I disagree with your blaming McCain and Bush for the financial meltdown. Particularly since Democrats are primarily to blame for it.

Ha!Ha!Ha!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The Republicans have won five of the last eight presidential elections.

Yes, by ever decreasing numbers. OK, there was a slight bump in 2004, but I think that had more to do with the fact that Bush was running against a chainsaw sculpture in a wig.

I am a conservative, and I hope to be able to call myself a Republican again someday. I don't now simply because the word contains too many implications that I not only agree with, but which nauseate me.

Frankly, the behavior many of my former "fellow" Republicans has been the one thing that has, however briefly, made me ashamed to be American. They have embraced childishness, shown a staggering disregard for logic, and have attempted to substitute arrogance for hard worn knowledge. They have mistaken opinion for fact, treated rhetorical tactics as truth, and behaved with the emotional maturity of pre teens.

McCain's audience booing him during his concession speech turned my stomach, but was anyone surprised?

It's been a tactic to respond to criticisms of the right with a criticism of the left, a logical fallacy so blatant that it's use alone would have been enough to make me lose faith in the intelligence of the right (and don't whine to me about losing faith in the intelligence of the left...I lost that decades ago.)

I am not anti right. I am not anti left. I AM anti whiner. I AM anti hypocrite. I AM anti crybaby. Which is why I poke at a certain small group of posters in pretty much every forum I frequent (I think we can all guess who I'm referring to for this particular forum.)

In no small way, America rejected this behavior. The only way for them to do this was to vote Democrat this time around. That may change soon, and it may well be that in 2012 (or even in 2010,) they will reject this behavior by voting the other way.

Say what you will about Obama, but he at least acts with poise. He acts his age. Anyone who would say the same for the right in this past election is lying, stupid, willfully ignorant, or all three. God Bless America.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"Without a sincere commitment to constitutional government, the GOP has no justifiable reason ever to govern again"

As if the GOP doesn't have a sincere commitment to constitutional government.

The Republican Party must embrace true conservatism if they want to take back the White House and the Congress from these liberals.

"Stick a fork in them."

The Republicans have won five of the last eight presidential elections. They have lost a battle. They're not dead.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Interesting article, and raising very valid points. Though I disagree with your blaming McCain and Bush for the financial meltdown. Particularly since Democrats are primarily to blame for it. That said, theres more then enough blame to go around on it.

The unconstitutional war comment was beyond stupid though. You've obviously never taken the trouble to read the constitution if you believe that. Saying otherwise is to delude yourself into thinking its something that its not. Theres a reason the Democrats didn't try to have the Supreme court declare the war unconstitutional.

Having said this, your comments about Bush and McCain betraying conservatism for big government liberalism, cloaked in the aura of social conservatism, is spot on. And unless and until, the Republicans repudiate this fiscal irresponsibility, they'll never be a National Party again.
