Two great companies and I won a bit of each.

The Google phone is 2 years too late, just like the Microsoft Zune Player was against the i-Pod.

two years late?, no the iphone blazed a touch screen trail, now the Android phones are catching up fast. Android will overtake and relegate the iphone to a niche much like the niche that mac computers occupy. Apple is only a minor player at 10 -15% of the market for smartphones. Symbian phones (Nokia) still dominate over 50% of the world smart phone market. Android is aiming at Apple but also further a field to Nokia, They have bigger fish to fry that Apple.

For Apple it's about image and profit. Apple also controls 100% of the process, from the drawing board to the customer.

For Google it's about upsetting the current way of thinking and getting people to use something new... and then make a percentage on that new product. So the bigger the market, the bigger the profit.

Two different styles and the market is big enough for them plus another 100.

flammenwufer, I didn't mean the Android platform was too late, I meant the Google phone in particular. US$530 unlocked. That is real price competitive.

Meh the "Blade Runner" (stolen name for the phone and its OS) is a piece of junk.

Google's going nowhere, and is living on borrowed time. They've had lots of VC's and shareholders pump money at them, thinking they're going to topple M$ or something, but all they're doing is propping another boring company (founded by maths algorithm nerds) that just tries to copy everybody, but promises they won't be "evil".

All I can see this "Gaff" doing is cannibalising the already dwindling Android market. It's not an iPhone killer...

Try buying an unlocked iphone legally oh wait.

Both companies are going to make plenty of money on this whether or not they deserve it. I see sirgamble knows nothing about business and the financial state of Google. They're in the black on ads alone and that's growing, everything else is just extra profits. In fact, they take home more in the bank every year than their entire company was worth a few years ago.

It's not a "Google" phone, per se. It's an HTC phone running Google's Android sold on Google's E-store. Word from the campfire is they've been less than stellar with regard to their customer service in re: in support of the phone.

People who buy it on Google's website are contacting Google for normal issues -however, Google is sending them to T-Mo, and T-mo (the service provider) is sending them over to HTC (the mfg) or Google (the seller). Quite the mess.

Will it be an iPhone killer? Doubtful; but it all remains to be seen. However, Apple are not going to rest in their laurels.
