Facebook may be having its day in the sun at the moment, but given enough time itll pass. People will get bored, people will get irritated by the constant unnecessary tinkering of it, the regular need to re-adjust the privacy settings after FB resets them with its latest revamp, etc. I came close to quitting just last week; The convenience of keeping touch with overseas family/friends was the only thing stopping me. The backlash will happen sooner or later. Id bet Google still has a few aces up its sleeve, and with Android now taking off, I wouldnt imagine that it`s too concerned.

From a general user's point of view, Facebook has replaced the internet using habit of Emails, chatting, messaging, making new friends, geo position sharing (checkig in) etc. into a new revolutionary way.

Everything has a pick time and there after it will be either stagnant or deteriorate. But Facebook has still a long way to expand and until any new super innovative startup pops out with enough investment to show minimum challenge this growing giant.

To say about Google, people still feel easy to googling for anything they wanna search and gmail, android OS, adsense are the things that will prevail in the long run as people are being benefited from these and nothing clash with the usage of Facebook.

I deleted FB recently. Felt lonely and isolated at first but then felt freedom. I don't want people who I do not regularly see in person knowing anything about me. You meet some guy in a bar and he sends a friend request. Gets all upset at you if you don't add him in. Wont drink with you at the bar next time. I got sick of all the privacy issues too.

It will be a strange new internet if people start using Facebook as their primary search tool, staying logged-in forever to one site and one network for everything.

@bobbafett Are you a guy or a girl? Because honestly if you're a girl with the name bobbafett I'd try to add you, too. Haha.

But seriously, I use Facebook ads all the time and they are great for targeting specific markets of users. Let's say you want to sell something to married men ages 21 - 24 who live in Vermont and like power boating. Facebook can offer that. Google can't.

Won't be too long before Google can do that as well. "Google ME" in the works as many insiders are aware of this. Might prove successful this time unlike Buzz.

Also if you've been following Google lately, you'll notice a huge buying spree of companies that all spell only one thing when combination. The companies will all be integrated to work with Google ME SOCIAL NETWORK. Very big feature list.

Now that Google is on it's biggest Hiring Spree ever this year looking for fresh talent and change in top management, be sure Google is not going anywhere, anytime soon.

If it every came to charging for Internet use, most of these companies -- Google excepted --would vanish overnight. Their sole appeal is that they're free.

I really, really hate getting all these stupid emails from Facebook! You know, you add your cousin in Mexico, cool, but then this cousin has a friend who says something about him, I have never met this guy, and then the stupid email comes into my Gmail?? I could care less what the hell some friend of a friend of a second or third cousin of mine thinks, let alone get a stupid email from this complete stranger!

Show me the money! Recent articles have questioned the supposed value Goldman Sachs has attached to it while trying to market its pre-IPO securities: $50 billion. There is no way Facebook generates the cash flow to justify this valuation, and in an industry with extremely low barriers to entry and infamously fickle customers, its future is anyone's guess. Google, on the other hand, is wide-spread and long term. My guess is that, ten years from now, Facebook will either have disappeared - or have been absorbed under the Google umbrella.

Do not trust Facebook. Goldman Sachs always speculate all sorts of funny things that are hard to believe. Their speculation about BRIC and N-11 countries can give you a clue about the credibility of their information.

I know exactly what you mean. How about adding people who just lurk and watch you, then worse, make comments in person about what you post. Then if you block them, they start acting different towards you. FB is almost like a cancer at times.

Google ME

That sounds somewhat off-color. If that's the name they go with, I can tell you now, it's going to flop.

Google should keep to what they do best -search. They are going the way of MFST, and they're being less successful at it (adding to their product portfolio in non-core areas). Their cash cow, Adwords, is hiding the fact that most of their non-core stuff are money losers.

FB has a good platform, it's the AOL of the 2010s --all nice and sandboxed. It remains to be seen if they don't mess up. Most likely they will. One can't be everything to everyone. That's not to say they won't threaten GOOG. They already surpassed GOOG in terms of attention (eyeballs, in the words of one Andy Grove). But not only as a destination for all things internet, but also for developers. Many of GOOGs top developers have tired of the new GGOG bureaucracy and have left for more dynamic and exciting pastures at FB.

Both Google and Facebook will fail when enough people start to realize that the services they offer are too expensive. Privacy has a value.
