But even $20 billion in ticket sales is no match, really, for "The Godfather" or "Taxi Driver."

That statement is oh so wrong. Clearly "The Godfather" of "Taxi Driver" are NO MATCH for Marvel films making multi billion dollars. If they were a match they would have made comparable amounts at the box office, but clearly they were NOT as popular with the masses. Yes the arty types got all excited by Godfather and its ilk, but all that really means is they think their taste is better than the masses. More cultured and somehow more correct.

I hate to be the one to burst their bubble but cinema isn't "just" about catering to a smaller section of "discerning" viewers with a more rounded view of cinema. It is about entertaining the masses and them making as big a profit as they can. If you take out needing a profit for studios and paying huge amounts to leading "stars" then you could make all the art house flicks you want. But many would not be watched as the Niche market is not enough to keep cinema's operating.

For the moment, super hero movies are where its at. You might not like it, but thankfully you dont get to dictate to all the people what they get to watch.

Peter14: You might not like it, but thankfully you dont get to dictate to all the people what they get to watch.

That's a lot of needless defensiveness. The point is that these superhero movies are low-grade trash, not that you don't get to watch them. The masses have paid big money for low-grade trash again and again throughout consumer history. And why not? There's certainly a place in the world for low-grade trash. But let's not confuse "popular" with "high quality." If "high quality" were determined by viewership size (as you seem to be claiming), then the Kardashians would be considered this generation's greatest artists.

No, they are not. They are well made, scripted and acted. Just because you may not agree, the proof is in their popularity. They just happen to be much more popular than what is made by Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola.

As are the Kardashians. Mainstream success is certainly a remarkable achievement in some sense, but it is not proof of quality.

the proof is in their popularity.

We can only assume Peter14 has some high praise for the technical musicianship of AKB48 as well. They're the most popular and highest-selling group in Japanese history, after all.

We can likewise assume The Original Wing believes that if its unpopular it must be quality.

From that Howard the Duck must be a masterpiece in his opinion as it flopped at the box office.

I have no idea who AGB48 is but if the original Wing thinks its crap then who am I to dare object?

Your an art house type unable to appreciate anything without a depth and emotional content that you demand in entertaining movies ala Coppola and Scorsese. Unable to let your imagination enjoy the superhero genre you must be your own superhero so congrats with that.

What you seem to be misunderstanding is the difference between 'I like it' and 'It's good.' One is subjective and the other is objective (or trying to be). I love Taco Bell burritos. Those burritos make me happy. But I still recognize that they're greasy, fattening, mass-produced junk food. I like them, but they're low quality.

I don't go down to the nearest 5-star restaurant and scream 'This is higher quality than your fois gras, because Taco Bell sells thousands every day! Take that, you arthouse idiots!'

On one line, there is like and dislike. On a separate line, there is high and low quality. They have very little to do with each other. You like something that's low quality. Me too. Same as everyone. Quit being defensive over it.

Also, popularity is totally irrelevant to high or low quality.

Also, you should check out an actual arthouse movie some day, if only to give you a sense that Scorsese and Coppola are REALLY far from it.

Just because you may not agree, the proof is in their popularity.

Somebody is declaring corporate junk food as fresh, nutritious, and satisfying to the senses. The lowest denominator sure works, and yes right, it is profitable.

I Watch movies that I like and that are high quality. I wouldnt waste money on poor quality goods.

What you dont seem to be able to understand is that not everyone thinks as you do and are happy with the quality of many Marvel movies. That you believe them to be trash is simply your opinion. As my opinion is that many are excellent movies of the highest quality.

Have a fantastic evening, Peter14

first thing, right off the bat : Joker is (extremely) popular, and it is one of the best movies of the last few decades. and hey, it ,s part of that superhero genre. popular movies can be (really) good. ex: Inception. is it the same as The Godfather? no. so what? is Ketchup better than Mustard? (much better than the comparison between junk food and 5 star restaurant food (rigged) ) is the cinema industry the same as it was 50 years ago? no, right? why nobody talks about the thousands of horrible movies out there? Scorsese, Coppola? anyone? let,s face it, they,re talking about Marvel because Marvel ,s getting all the money. is that a good thing? idk, that,s another discussion. but the thing is, nowadays being a snob is like a part time job for some.

I am a big fan of movies, but other than the first Superman and Spiderman movies, am not interested in the torrent of superhero movies flooding the theaters. Someone must like them, but it sure isn't me, or anyone I know.

to @1glenn, as a fellow fan of all things cinema, i say you,re missing some good stuff out there. sure, all these comicbook movies flooding the theaters, i,m gonna agree that that ,s too much, but if we pay attention, we can always find some actual good movies ( in my case i like just a few movies from the MCU, and still just a few movies from the whole comicbook/superhero genre in general and the ones that fall into the category of personal favorites is fewer than just a few ), my point being, whether it,s a comicbook movie or not, whether it,s really popular or not, we can still find good movies nowadays, enjoy it and there,s still quality in it. people should stop the comparisons, because it,s not comparable. different eras, different genres, different themes, different types of quality.
