Some critics say the United Nations could spend less on perks and bloated, often tax-free, salaries for senior officials.

"There is huge waste in the U.N.," said Marc Limon, a former diplomat and Executive Director of Universal Rights Group."Instead of focusing on the U.N. mandate ... the U.N. spends a lot of money on high salaries in many cases."

That's an understatement. The entire organization is a bloated, unaccountable house of ill-repute full of corrupt and lazy officials living on on other people's money. Kick them out and shut the UN down.

U.N. is a complete and utter joke.

If this is where the UN thinks it will save decent money it co0nfirms that it is run by dimwits.  The huge cost of UN missions around the world where staff live in relative luxury, travel in business or first, drive brand new cars etc etc is one area.  as said in this article, salaries and perks is another.

UN has become an outdated and pretty ineffective body that could do with root and branch reform (or abolition).

Move the UN out of New York and sell the property for a tidy profit. Move the UN out of America to a cheaper location.

Yep...all of the above...and hold videoconferences like any other business instead of bringing the fatcats in.

This.

If the UN didn't exist we would need to create it, probably after the next world war!

For all its faults it has and serves a useful purpose.

That said there is undoubted massive waste and inefficiencies; like all organisations over time they become prey to empire building and bureaucratic sclerosis. Root and branch cleansing of the dead wood and deletion of the perks and privileges is in order, those who don't like it can leave and see if they can find as cushy a number anywhere else. Then the UN can face its donors (note the word bureaucrats) from the moral high ground.
