A loss for the entire world, an intelligent, humanistic woman steering the ship of Germany and influencing so many to the side of sanity...if the Nobel Foundation were to find her worthy, it would be difficult to imagine an objection.

An impressive politician. When you are in charge for that long, you’ll make mistakes but she’s a survivor.

The damages have been done and that massively and completely. It won’t even be possible to correct those 16 years in 16 thousand years.

Looks like the hysterical partisans have arrived.

It’s sad or see them utterly consumed by partisanship.

Yep, aka prejudice. Probably the world’s most positively exemplary leader of her generation.

You’d think that just looking at how long her tenure was would be enough to make them think that she must have something about her. I utterly despised Margaret Thatcher’s politics, but I’m reasonable enough to recognize that she must have had something about her stay in power that long.

Merkel isn’t some one-term loser or stopgap. She wasn’t a Jimmy Carter, Theresa May, Nicolas Sarkozy or Donald Trump.

Looking at it objectively, a very good politician.

Merkel was the leader Germany and Europe needed at just the right time. Provided stability and common sense. Had her failures and success's and on balance will be remembered as a good leader. Sorry to see her go. Respect.

She stayed in power for so long because she was an astute and utterly ruthless political manipulator helped by there being no believable opposition alternative and heading the party that traditional moderate Germans habitually voted for.

Her actual record is somewhat patchy, she made some seriously bad decisions.
