Most of his blustering is not really meant for foreign consumption, but for his own people, who are quite likely near revolution levels of desperation. He's trying with all his might, as ALL leaders do, to focus the massive problems of the country outward.

North Korea wants money and aid. This time round neighbouring countries are not giving in so easily to North Korea's provocations, so fat boy keeps upping the rhetoric. I hope the South Koreans will not give in to his threats, but I fear they might.

I see an escalation arising because NK expects to be allowed a small "one up", with no rebuttal. Eg., shelling islands, releasing water from a dam to cause an unexpected and dangerous flood in SK, sinking a SK naval ship, etc. But SK and US already have plans put in place to answer in equal nature, of equal force. Cetainly the will make some small move soon. That may be answered. Eventually NK will be forced to make a choice between humiliation of not having the final "word", or making some large move which amounts to full war. The population in most danger is not in the US, or in Japan, but in Seoul, because it is the only really strategic target that can be certainly targeted successfully.
