Gender is merely a social construct

I heard this lots, and it sounded like gibberish for a long time. There are clear differences between males and females.

After reading more to understand it, I get it. The markers we have set as 'male' and 'female' are arbitrary. What defines 'male'? No matter what definition you choose, there will be males who do not fit that definition. What defines 'female'? No matter what definition you choose, there will be females who do not fit that definition. Male and female are not two isolated points, rather it's a range. We as society have just chosen two points on that range and arbitrarily said 'this is male' and 'this is female'. So the claim that 'gender is a social construct' is actually incorrect - gender is a very real thing. However, the points within the gender range that we have defined as 'male' and 'female' are a social construct.

Sex is biology, gender just a load of societal customs and stereotypes. You can't change your sex, you can choose to follow any gender stereotype you wish.

Good questions Burning Bush.

99.something% of the world is biologically clearly either male or female. Let's stick to nature and common sense and adhere to those binary definitions.

For those who inwardly feel differently to their biological sex we must be biologically honest and not refer to them as the sex they wish to be, because clearly they are not.

Rather we should refer to them as an entirety separate category. Thus we can avoid confusion such as biological men winning women's sports events.

Finally, let's not encourage our children that crossing genders is healthy. Why?

1: People suffering gender dysphoria suffer very high rates of suicide even post reassignment surgery.

2: Reassignment surgery involves mutilation of body parts.

3: Puberty blocking drugs have damaging side effects.

If adults want to take these risks, fine. But the facts show that it is harmful to promote transgederism to children.

So you want to use binary-language to describe a situation that is clearly not binary.

Seems legit.

Why does it have to be so complicated?

Why does it have to be so complicated?

Because we're on a natural planet that just evolved, not one that was designed.

Strangerland:

My point was to refer to the 99.something% in binary terms and to refer to the others as a separate category.

Thus we will avoid confusion. Let's call people what they actually are.

Example:

A biological male is a man.

A biological man who FEELS female should not be called a female but continue to be called a male.

A biological man who has gender reassignment surgery should not be called a female but rather some other name that reflects thier true biological state.

I think that's reasonable. What do you think?

Burning Bush said - "...Well lefties... which one is it?..."

That's a classic line. So now political bent recognizes gender bends.

Following thru with your line, one can only assume there are no right leaning LGBTs or if there are they were all "made" by society. You know - too much time spent in one genders company???

Having taught 1,000s of kids / young people over decades, I can assure you that "wholesome goodie straight laced nice parents" who have non-gender specific children are not rare in the least. No one "made" as you suggest all of these kids.

Of course environmental conditions can influence growth - no one would argue against that - but a blanket statement and tying it to politics shows the colour of your feathers.

Um, the ‘bi’ in binary is Latin for two. And you’ve listed three categories, which is not binary.

And you’re basically just suggesting that we pigeonhole everyone into three categories, rather than two.

Strangerland:

Perhaps I didn't explain myself very well.

The point is to refer to people honestly according to biological realities.

In other words we won't call a biological man a female simply because he feels like one. If he has reassignment surgery we can call him something else that reflects his new biological reality, but not female because he isn't one.

Does this make sense to you?

Modern transgenderism totally confuses the meanings of the words 'male' and 'female'.

If a biological male claims to be female and we accept that he is in fact female then what does the word 'female' actually mean? How do you then describe female characteristics?

Let's let people be what they want to be but not confuse the genders. Call those with gender dysphoria something that reflects what they actually are.

1: If they have not had reassignment surgery call them the gender they were born.

2: If they have had reassignment surgery call them something else, not the sex they wish to be.

Looks like we're going to end up with three sets of toilets, "Men, Women" and "Etcetera!"

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Man and woman are biological terms, right? Male and female are genders? So, why is a bloke dressed up as a lady referred to as a transgender woman? Surely he's a transgender man. Or rather, she's a transgender man.

I don't see what the fuss is about. It's too complicated. And there's something intrinsically wrong in all this. Why the 41% attempted suicide rate? It's not the bullying. There are people who get far more bullying and who don't attempt suicide.

I think in many of these cases there is a mental problem. Unfortunately, psych hasn't a clue what to do about it.

What a presumptuous headlineL "Science says" ! There is no such voice as "science". There are people who call themselves scientists because of their involvement in the pursuit of scientific truth, but there is no monolithic consensus on many things, especially subjects like this.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

there is no monolithic consensus on many things

And there is monolithic consensus on many things. You have claimed this is not one of them. Care to support this assertion? I'm doubtful that it was actually based in any kind of fact-checking as to your comment.

There are people who call themselves scientists who contradict each other, so it is an instance of the fallacy of Appeal To Authority to speak as if there is unanimity among them. especially on an issue of semantics such as how the word :gender" is to be used. If you want to find "scientists" who do not agree, you shouldn't have to do your own googling for very long

There are people who call themselves scientists who contradict each other

Yeah, that's how the scientific method works. Have you ever bothered to look into it?

If you want to find "scientists" who do not agree, you shouldn't have to do your own googling for very long

Oh I have no doubt they exist, but we weren't talking about whether or not they exist, you were implying there is no monolithic consensus on this, something that I called into question suspecting you just said that without having any idea whether or not it was the truth - and you've posted nothing since to indicate that you had even bothered to take a cursory fact check of your claim.

Thumbs up if you agree with the Feminists that gender is a social construct and is not inate.

Thumbs down if you agree with the LGBT crowd that gender is a biological construct and is inate.

And what about when we don't agree with either of those?

As long as your birth certificate and ID goes by what is between your legs, I don't care if you want to be called a fire truck. Just don't get pissed at me when I can't tell you identify as a toaster oven just by looking at you.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

If you don't agree with either Feminism or the LGBT delusion then join me on side of natural gender roles, where normalcy and common sense prevails.

But I think you are even more wrong than the two points you expressed earlier. So what do I do then?

Agreed.

So a person born can be called an Alien or Demon or Vampire too? they are living creatures too?

All this classifications, PC culture is toxic to humanity and to Japan.

For children, medicine to suppress puberty may be considered, to buy time as the youth grapples with questions of gender identity.

Haaa? seriously??
