Just about everybody except 80% of the Japanese population.

move each Olympics back one cycle, so Tokyo Olympics will now be held in 2024, Paris in 2028, & LA in 2032.

Everybody wins

It’s not that simple... postponing Olympics cost money as Japan did so spending an extra 12 billion yen ( more unofficially) just for a year! There are so many factors related to the timeline which hosts follow and prepare for according to the bids that they put forward. To cater for the inconvenience of one country hosting the Olympics you are suggesting making two other future hosts to suffer! It’s better to let one suffer rather than three!

Mag. I'm with Tooheys, the simplest and most easily understood option of bumping it back to 2022. France has a few extra years to sort its own stuff out too. Japan didn't create the virus and should not lose out completely for something completely beyond their control. Would it be that much of a mammoth cost increase to just put everything on hold until then, and come post-Corona world 2.0 2022 do the games in full splendor? What are the athletes saying too? Haven't heard much from the various sporting federations. The bump option not even mentioned in the article, is it really that undoable?

If it happens before or in 2022, it will flop. Also there is crappy world cup on that year.

Even if everything goes back to normal, people's interest have now changed. Example, One who is into sport is now into books.

I have been wondering how in the world the Summer Olympics could be held safely in Japan, until last night, when I heard that the IOC has brought up the possibility that the Olympics would be held without any spectators. Doing that would not solve all threats from the pandemic, but would help.

Still, with the latest variants of the virus being extremely contagious, even taking the step of not allowing spectators might not be enough to make the Olympics safe.

What exactly would differ on July 23rd from today in regards to the pandemic?

Just cancel it. This has been an Albatross on the neck of the nation

Having met people and supporting somebody with the virus now and the pathetically poor response of the Japanese government then the Olympics CANNOT continue.

If Japanese are dying alone at home then foreigners coming here with the infection might as well sign their death warrants before getting on the plane....

I'm sorry to hear this, and hope that the person you are supporting gets well soon.

Do these experiences mean that you will be taking the vaccine, after all?
