China's economy would implode if they started a war with the USA. The USA would ban all trade and economic activity in China and most if not all USA's allies would follow suit. Money makes the world go round and China would hurt exponentially more with any type of war with the USA.

On the military side: This is not mentioning the USA's military capabilities dwarfs China (although weaker now under the Obama administration). China has the numbers in number of personnel but with today's current weapons of war, the playing can easily be leveled.

Few of US allies would follow the US in a trade war with China. China is just too big a market, and the rest of the world haven't been suckered into believing in Trump the way that America has. Just like very few countries followed America into Iraq, very few countries would follow America in a trade war with China. As you say, money makes the world go round, and an America of decreasing influence combined with a China of increasing influence is going to have most countries staying neutral.

And that ignores the fact that China owns so much American debt, and manufactures a HUGE quantity of American goods - a trading war with China would kill the economy, and cut off supply lines of so much manufacturing.

Such a trade war with China might be all to the benefit of Trump, as he seeks to restore US manufacturing and restructure domestic economics. Becoming less-dependent on outside political factors seems to be one of his major aims, and China had better not ignore that issue. Whether or not there is a trade war, a Trump America will begin to wean itself away from their manufacturing. (Although it can be hard to be certain exactly WHAT his aims are at times! ;)
