For those who don’t know, there’s a political party in the UK called the Monster Raving Loony Party. Its US branch is called the Republican Party, and currently its preferred candidates to be the next President are Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis.

Of course in the UK, the MRLP never gets anywhere, because neither the voters nor the party take it seriously. Things are different with the US branch.

“I think he’s the only one with the intestinal fortitude to put our country back,” echoed her husband, Perry, 62.

I have always been curious about to what time period in American history the MAGA contingent want to go back to? In recent memory there is the Bush era, with immigration liberalization and foreign intervention.

Or before the civil rights movement and full Jim Crow? Reagan who started taxing Social Security benefits?

These people seem to have a lot of passion and prejudices, but be very short on ideas. Which is why they have been easy to satirize.

DeSantis and Trump insulting one another...seems like MAGA-world is siding with DeSantis over the vaccine...

Really? Trump thinks he's "gutless" - you agree?

Depending on the context, opposing someone on a policy issue and making that a personal statement based on that doesn't mean I dislike or want to demean the individual, but knowing you, you like the cherry-pick things.

Uh-huh - you agree with Trump DeSantis is gutless?

DeSantis thinks Trump's lockdown in 2020 was wrong - you agree?

I thought all lockdowns were wrong, regardless of who I support.

OK, you agree with DeSantis that Trump screwed up with his lockdown....in addition to his claiming the vaccine "works and it's safe".... Quite a bit you disagree with him on....

And today we learn this....

*Former vice president Mike Pence on Friday strongly rejected former president Donald Trump’s renewed claims that he could have personally overturned the results of the 2020 election. “I heard this week that President Trump said I had the right to overturn the election. President Trump is wrong. I had no right to overturn the election. The presidency belongs to the American people, and the American people alone,” he said at a Federalist Society event in Florida. “Frankly there is almost no idea more un-American than the notion that any one person could choose the American president,” he added.*

Turmoil in MAGA-world....

Mr DeSantis has been trying to outTrump Mr Trump … a very difficult thing to do!

1 ( +3 / -2 )

DeSantis is a combination of Trump and McConnell - smarter than Donald, just as conniving and unscrupulous as Mitch...

Like other Red State Govs, he's shown he'll stoop to any low to grab power...

The big question is, will Trump's pro-vaccine stance sour the MAGA masses? Will DeSantis turn on Trump and call him a "sell-out" for urging the vax and booster?

More machinations in MAGA-world....

zichi:

I know all that, mate. No disrespect meant to Screaming Lord Sutch, who I remember fondly.

The key point of my post is in this comment of yours:

The MRLP still goes on with its votes for insanity.

And so do the Republicans. It's just that one of them knows they're insane, and the other doesn't.

Desantis is well educated, and certainly smarter than Trump, but while he tries to imitate, he can’t generate the hate and fear of others that Trump can. If you want to be part of a hateful, angry, and adoring crowd, it’s Trump and only Trump.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

He's just another one. They're all the same. Thinks he's right about everything and is right about about nothing. Kind of like here...

Trump won’t share the limelight with anyone. As long as he is alive he will want to be the center of attention. He will run in 2024 then in 2028 then in 2032 and so on regardless of whether he wins or loses the election. It’s all about Trump Trump Trump in his world. If anyone challenges him for being the new face of The Republican Party, then be prepared to face the abuse and harassment that Trump will send your way!

Oh my god! I have never lived in America nor I consider myself one, but due to some jus sanguinis law I also posses an American passport and boy, if he runs for office, I would find myself registering immediately for voting in the next election, this guy rocks!

This is the most common problem with many countries where people who have no interest in a country, contribute nothing to that country and have no plans to be part of that country vote in elections to chose a leader…

The party that gave the world Sarah Palin. Lunacy of the highest order.

Not sure about all that, but DeSantis is definitely a rock star in the conservative arena.

And you think they're Governors? LOL....

Given have absolutely terrible the Democrats are polling these days, you could put any Republican up, that isn't Trump, and there likely to win it.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Trump fears DeSantis in 2024.

Naw, he doesn't, but he did once say that if he wouldn't run, DeSantis would continue his policies so that's just as good.
