There is much that each nation can do without having to court favor from the other.

Most of the co2 emissions from the USA, 60%, are in the form of tail pipe exhausts. Pres. Biden has pledged to move us away from internal combustion engines. This does not depend overly much on working with China.

Most of the co2 emissions from China, 75%, are in the form of exhaust from coal powered electricity plants. China is not currently doing enough to reverse this problem, but it can be addressed without very much cooperation from other countries. While China uses more electric vehicles than the rest of the world combined, that does nothing to help with global atmospheric deterioration if the EVs are powered from coal plants.

Nevertheless, it would be better for the two superpowers to cooperate wherever possible, and there are many areas where cooperation would help both countries, and the world as a whole. One can dream.
