And so many of the people who did the shooting were on psychiatric drugs at the time, undergoing some kind of mental “treatment” at the time or had a history of psychiatric "treatment."

Wasn't very effective, was it?

BertieWooster,

Do you have a source for that? Here's one that drills into that claim:

www.bbc.com/future/article/20180509-is-there-a-link-between-mass-shooting-and-mental-illness

My main problem with it is that mental illness occurs all across the world, but the 'associated' mass shootings occur mainly (not only) in the US.

Oh, come on. It makes perfect sense. In 1791.

It's certainly true that it's mainly in the States.

There are several factors, I think.

One is that it's still very easy to get hold of firearms in the States compared to most other countries.

Another is the prevalence of violence in the media. There always seem to be a large number of killings in US movies.

And yet another is the ubiquitousness of psychs. TV stations have their psych advisors, schools have them in abundance, businesses, etc., etc., the US is riddled with them. People imagine that the psychiatrists and psychologists know all about the mind, but in reality, they are almost useless.

Psych is a pseudoscience. It catalogues. It presents lists of impressive sounding disorders, but is powerless to do anything to help. Well, that's not entirely true. There are some successes. But the real successes are rare and if it were a science it would be happening one on one.

Anyone who carries out a mass shooting is mentally ill in some way, they are most certainly not completely sane.

BertieWooster,

On the firearms issue I agree. Violence in movies, not so much. Again, that is common everywhere. Japan has spawned some incredibly violent media (video games in particular) and we don't see nearly as much gun violence here and in other comparable countries. Knife and arson attacks, sure. I'm not saying violence in media doesn't fuel aggression, rather that access to firearms is the more immediate cause.

I won't argue with you on your points about psychology and psychiatry because I don't know much about it. Just internet stuff.

Thanks for the reply, and if you have that link, that'd be great.

Harry_Gatto,

I agree, but do they have a definable, diagnosable condition such as paranoia or schizophrenia, or more general mood disorders such as anger and anxiety? As it stands in the States, the latter aren't commonly cause for the removal of an individual's gun rights.

Bertie Wooster:

I agree with what you’re saying about psychology generally, it’s a much overrated “science”. I’d say however that with killers like the recent Buffalo shooter, they’re not really suffering from a genuine mental illness such as depression or schizophrenia. What they are are psychopaths, or at the very least sociopaths. That’s what makes them untreatable by any discipline, and such a danger to anyone in their vicinity on the wrong day.

That country is like a warzone. No wonder the government likes starting wars abroad.

I only took one course in psychology, but I learned right away that there are some fundamental psychiatric truths that are well worth learning.

The Soviet dictator Stalin funded Pavlov very well, in order to learn how to better control the people.

@Pukey2 So tell me what its like to live in a warzone? I have never experienced it. I assume you have lived in a warzone to make such a statement? No wonder you can make such a statement

So when African Americans kill one another its Oh thats how they are. When white people go on a shooting rampage and kill african american it becomes crickets in the news. Last but not least but when white men go on a shooting rampage especially in "mass shooting" its because they have a mental illness. Ok I get it!!!

Joe Biden doesn’t have an “empathetic” bone anywhere in his greedy body. A deranged young man, with no coherent “ideology,” goes on a murderous rampage, and, right on cue, JB seizes his political opportunity…So-called “progressives” have long boasted of gaining power through demographic change. The irony is that they may be grossly miscalculating. More and more Hispanics are fed up with “white liberal” virtue signaling…I have two “Asian” offspring in America, voting immigrants. And they vote Republican.

The 2nd Amendment is an excuse for these hate militias. There's that word - 'militia'. Thing is, in those days the Colonial militias became what we now refer to as the US Army, something these militia crud are not man enough to join. They use the 2nd Amendment as an excuse for racist and violent abuse. And Jan. 6, 2021 obviously showed the results.

And the AM mayhem blabbermouths who never matured beyond age 16 have been feeding Americans with paranoid LIES. Wayne LaPierre has been making moolah by doing the same. Guys like Quentin Tarantino have been making films glorifying sudden violence just for the hell of it (amongst other things).

When blacks kill blacks, it's just 'another day'. When whites kill whites, ho-hum. When blacks kill whites, it's a circus on TV, oh yeah. And that factor determines who gets executed in America too. I learned that fact in a statistics class, BION. Kill a white, death penalty. Kill anyone else, it's just jail.

America was founded on violence and has continued that way ever since. In its 250+ yrs of existence, the country has only NOT been at war for 20yrs.
