Too much money, power and politics involved for honesty to remain. Even if told the truth, would the world believe it?

CORRUPT. Period.

But Stevens suggested the problem was more one of the WHO's leverage rather than China's attitude.

For anybody that has followed the pandemic is very clear this is the main problem. It is not that one single country has power over the WHO, the reality is that the WHO is powerless to go against any country's interests, it can be against the deeply flawed way of some countries to deal with the spreading, or the completely unjustified problems in the EU for the delivery of vaccines, the WHO can only make terribly timid declarations of disapproval.

Of course China is hiding things, that is what it always do, but since the WHO has been left without any leverage it can only choose two options, react angrily and get zero cooperation/information or just fold and get whatever it can so maybe something can be done to prevent the next pandemic.

Yes as long as these officials are paid by CCP they are like puppies for China...

"Human Rights Watch director Ken Roth said the WHO was guilty of "institutional complicity" when it gave credence to some of Beijing's early claims about the outbreak."

Some idiots will say that the author of this piece or the guy quoted above are right wing extremists, because only right wing extremists are critical of WHO.

This is complete nonsense. If the WHO had a spine it would publicly castigate China for its interference and dishonesty throughout the whole COVID affair, as well as its childish economic sanctions against countries that dare to question the CCP version of events. But the WHO is content to appease a bully, something that hasn't worked all that well in history.

To gain exactly what? how would that have helped get the extremely necessary information that China had exclusively during the first weeks/months of the pandemic?

Even with that information many countries failed to prepare properly and thousands of lives were lost unnecessarily, but others went with the science from the beginning and put forward measures that were completely dependent on that information.

Maybe for you it is more important to feel important and vindicated, but for people that have a responsibility over thousands if not millions of lives the most important thing is to get whatever is available to give them a chance to fight the disease. The WHO do not have the power (anymore) to push countries until they give what they have, but the need for cooperation has not changed.

The problem is that China can't be trusted to give accurate and timely information when it counts, and will only provide information when it serves China's interests. This has been demonstrated since the beginning, when China sealed off Wuhan from the rest of the country while allowing flights to leave to international destinations, and recent whitewash investigation when they let the WHO in after they had a whole year to sanitise the suspect sites and ensure that investigators had only limited access to the WIV. How could they gather accurate information and conduct their scientific investigations with one hand tied behind their back?

The CCP's childish retaliatory behavior when it comes to countries that criticize its response and openness isn't proof in itself that they either created the virus or let it escape from the lab, but it doesn't help China's case. They would instead gain some credibility by allowing unfettered access to the WIV and other sites of interest, as well as all their information on the virus. That's not going to happen.

You're welcome to apologize for China's behavior, but it's their intransigence that's threatening people's lives. They don't care what happens outside China unless it directly benefits China and the CCP in particular. Nothing to do with me. If the WHO hadn't;t costed up to China in the first place with puppets like Tedros and Bruce Aylward, they likely wouldn't have lost the funding last year that Trump cut off. Dug their own hole there for the sake of politics.

The problem is that China can't be trusted to give accurate and timely information when it counts,

And having no information whatsoever improves this how? It is irrelevant if it serves its own interests or not, if other countries response depends on it then there is still value in getting it, instead of waiting for weeks without a hint about what is that should be done. Nobody had to take the information as if it were completely trustworthy, but confirm it is a much faster and easier task than doing everything from zero, that time saves lives.

None of the actions that you list reduce at all the value of having the pathogen identified and its full genomic sequence open, the symptomatology and incubation periods known, the appearance of asymptomatic carriers, etc. etc.

d recent whitewash investigation when they let the WHO in after they had a whole year to sanitise the suspect sites and ensure that investigators had only limited access to the WIV. How could they gather accurate information and conduct their scientific investigations with one hand tied behind their back?

Why would that have any importance? the main purpose of the investigation is to identify the way the pathogen entered the human world, and the WIV is irrelevant for this, experts don't believe the conspiracy theory where a virus escaped from the lab and travelled without causing any outbreaks out of the most populous city of the province just to begin to cause causes in humans in more isolated areas for weeks. Samples and information from outside of Wuhan are much more important for the purpose, because at this point the only realistic explanation involves those much earlier cases and much more importantly what they can find in the usual natural reservoirs for coronaviruses.

China is obviously not interested in gaining credibility, and your solution (antagonize it and threat it with... nothing?) would not make it act differently. And there is no need to apologize for what it has done (why quote a comment if you are not even going to read it in the first place) but your "solution" would solve absolutely nothing and would have meant losing extremely valuable time, just so you could feel better by screaming at the bully.

Trump was just another China for the WHO, found his scapegoat and did the predictable thing, if the CCP has childish retaliation the ex-president is not far behind, and did the WHO criticize him bitterly? no, because once again the problem is not that the WHO is on the part of China, the problem is that it has no power to pressure any country, not even when they act against the interests of the world. the US, Europe, Japan, China make sure to put it in that place, so it is just hypocritical for any of the responsible parties to now complain that it cannot make countries do its will.

I think they've both proven, many times over, that they're not worthy of our trust.
