Who do you think you are?

By Anne Good

“You say, ‘Yes’, I say ‘No’. You say, ‘Stop’ and I say ‘Go, go, go’. Oh no. You say ‘Goodbye’ and I say ‘Hello, hello, hello’. I don’t know why you say ‘Goodbye’, I say ‘Hello, hello, hello’. I don’t know why you say goodbye, I say hello.”

When Lennon and McCartney penned those lyrics all those years ago, whether they knew it or not, they were making a statement:

“We are none of us alike.”

The Sixties was an era of increasing self-awareness. In the UK, people were beginning to stand up for what they believed in and the Beatles certainly didn’t hesitate to let their feelings be known.

What do people mean when they say "I?"

It can't be the body. We say, "I have a body," and not "I am a body."

I don't grow my teeth or hair, or beat my heart. Those are things that I don't appear to have any control over, and are things that happen to me. So what, essentially, is this I?

Perhaps there's a little entity somewhere in the middle of one's skull that gets all the sensory input from the eyes, ears, etc. and operates a control panel that determines actions.

It's an intriguing question if one stops and thinks about it.

I am only my body.

My mind uses a survival tool to turn my conciousness into an illusion of what some call a soul, others call a spirit and others have countless other references and descriptions. I do not deny that I feel like I have a "self." I simply deny that a self is anything more than my body and predominantly my brain. Others will argue the brain vs. mind using various thesis's. Again, I am not saying I don't feel like I have a self but if my finger is burned by fire the pain appears to be in my finger when we clearly know that it is not. The pain is in your brain. It is a survival tool to create the illusion that the pain is in your finger. The recoil response time is much greater due to an illusion.

Now I know that my viewpoint is the least acceptable there is. I know that a person can dispute an afterlife and accept evolution and still believe in a self, soul, spirit or what have you.

I believe the brain is a miracle. To use a collection of memories and a supporting sub-conscious system to create such an illusion that poets can speak of our souls so clearly is a feat of nature.

So even though I do not believe I am anything beyond the bounds of what one can see when facing me, I do believe that within those boundaries of my body containing my brain there are limitless possibilities.

I don't expect to change one single person's mind. I just wanted to say that someone thinks the odd thoughts I think and believes them.

On the other hand, I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together.

John Lennon himself revealed that most of his song lyrics had no special meaning, he was just looking for words that rhymed. These lyrics don't mean anything, they're nonsensical. The Beatles are been overly lionized for profundity in their lyrics and even they themselves are weary of it.
