Depp has done some good stuff but when he does this parodic rubbish my stomach churns.

Deep has been very universal in his myriad of carachters. As for authenticity, IT's Johnny Depp for crying out loud! Realistic roles are not what he is known for.

Of course there is no way in hell they would use a real Indian (native American) to play the part. At least Jay Silverheels was the real thing. But then again, a grown man riding around in a black mask in the late 19th century isn't all that authentic either.

This looks worthy of watching on a transpacific flight ( free & not bothered if I slumber) My favorite film of his was when he played Joe Pistone aka Donnie Brasco.

its like Jack Sparrow with a bird on his head, no biggie

Let's hope it's better than that job they did on Alice in Wonderland.

I Thought the exact same thing....
yeah... "tonto" in Spanish is a word that means "dumb" so imagine the laughter at the Spanish speaking countries... let´s see how Disney will translate the name, since they do that for the international releases they changue the name someties...

Recent films by Depp are poor charicatures.
A once fun and campy Dark Shadows series and later movie turned into absolute comedic crap that completely betray the original intents of the creators and achievements of the original cast members.
The idea of a revised Tonto is good, but why Depp? Why not cast one of the many Native American actors to at least give a little cultural authenticity to the role instead of this rebranded cultural white-washing? What improved social message or statement can be made by this phoney cowboy duo?
My feeling is forget this trash. If you want to see a historically accurate depiction of what a Lone Ranger and Tonto are like, try Dursa Uzala, a Kurosawa film about Russian military land surveyer who befriends a Native Siberian man by the name Dursa. Dursa's all died of small pox (from contact with likely other Russian explorers), but teaches the explorers skills to survive because he has no other purpose left in life.

CORRECTION TO ABOVE: *Dursa's family all died of small pox

I just wonder if this film is more "Tonto, and his White Friend" than "White Man, with Indian companion." In other words is Johhny Depp the real star of this movie.

Maybe because none of those "many Native American actors" has a name as recognizable as Johnny Depp? You do realize that many moviegoers attend movies based on the main actors/director nowadays, right? Name one Native American actor who is a tenth as recognizable. Hollywood isn't a charity, you know. It's a business.
