"...O’Reilly and Dugard the most widely read historians..." Historians? These two?

This topic, the final year of the war in the Pacific, has been covered very well indeed by John Toland (Rising Sun - The Decline And Fall Of The Japanese Empire, c1970) and by Max Hastings in his book, Retribution - The Battle For Japan 1944-45, c2007.

As for the atomic bomb, there are several books the very best of which are: The Making Of The Atomic Bomb by Richard Rhodes, c1986 American Prometheus - The Triumph and Tragedy of J Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird & Martin Sherwin, c2005 And, History Wars -- The Enola Gay And Other Battle For The American Past by Edward Linenthal & Tom Engelhard, c1996

The whole "The Killing of" series has succeeded in making Mr. O'Reilly very rich, but has broken no new ground intellectually, which is not surprising. Outside of the author's fan base for his right-wing talk show, no one is interested in his books.

I assume as it is by Bill O'Reilly it will be placed in the fiction section of libraries.

The Decision to Use the Atomic Bomb by Gar Alperovitz is very good. However, the book doesn't fit the approved narrative here.

“Killing the Rising Sun” is the sixth of nine planned books in a series

The title has a nice little ring to it.

A far better Rising Sun book to read would be John Toland's The Rising Sun: Decline and Fall of the Japanese Empire 1936-1945 http://www.amazon.com/The-Rising-Sun-Japanese-1936-1945/dp/0812968581

I am waiting for these erudite historians to write Killing the Keg about the rise and fall of American university frats. Now that would be a much better read than the stale safe subjects Bill O writes about.
