Japan-guide.com, a portal for information on travel and tourism in Japan which sees 1.8 million visitors each month, has released the first episode of a video series titled “Japan's New Golden Route - 7 Day trip from Tokyo to Kyoto: Episode 1” which introduces a lesser-known route from Tokyo to Kyoto that can be taken using the Hokuriku Arch Pass.

Tokyo and Kyoto are two of Japan’s most popular tourist destinations, and travel between them is typically done via the Tokaido Shinkansen, along what has become known as Japan’s “golden route”, which stretches along the main island’s relatively urbanized Pacific coast. This video series introduces an alternate route along the Sea of Japan, which allows travelers to see a less-traveled, more rural side of the country. With stylish use of informative graphics and overhead drone footage, the first episode details the itinerary of the first two days spent touring the areas of Tokyo, Saitama, Gunma, and Nagano.

Handling production of the episode are Japan Guide’s Sam Evans and Charles Sabas. Sam, who hosts the video while capturing the trip in photographs, also wrote the accompanying article.

He had this to say about his experience: “What an amazing adventure across the country. It was a long way to travel and a fair bit of organization had to go in to the project beforehand to make sure everything went smoothly, but it paid off and allowed us to make what we believe to be a video series that really does justice to the beautiful parts of the country we visited. A challenge while filming was the heat of the sticky Japanese summer, and I think this will be evident looking my forehead in a few of the shots! Despite this though we were blessed with some stunning scenery and experiences that we thoroughly enjoyed capturing.”

Videographer Charles Sabas reflected on the experience as well: “Traveling from Tokyo to Kyoto via all these amazing locations felt like an adventure of a lifetime. The heavy gear and the heat were immediately forgotten once we'd get to a spot. I really hope that the beautiful images we filmed will motivate people to discover this more tranquil side of Japan.”

Episodes 2 and 3 of the series are planned for release in October.
